Why do people enjoy his stories so much? His works are dated, even by the standards of the time they were made in.

Why is "dated" bad?

I don't know. Trevize, Pelorat, and Bliss make for far more entertaining reading, and cosmological speculation. Never mind the banter.

kys faggot learn some new words for once in your life instead of crying about something being "dated". You know whats fucking dated? Your whore of a mother, matter of fact, just saw that fossil getting double fisted in the walmart parking lot for a baggie of "cocaine" that was actually shattered glass and flour

>> No.22479309

I like it because it's dated. Up to date fiction isn't racist and often has too much gay shit.

>> No.22479321

I don't think they're dated
They're written in a very modern way for fiction
They're great
HP Lovecraft, Arthur Conan Doyle, Tolkien and Patrick O'Brian are my favourite authors

You either get it or you don't desu.

I used to get it, but now I don't. I think because "cosmic horror" became kind of a mainstream sci-fi element (look at all the awful Cthulhu board games) and really "cosmic horror" is not a thing that most people can really relate to, and therefore it has been basically ruined.

Cosmic horror is really a "horror of the hidden" genre: you don't see the monster, you can't, because you won't comprehend it. When Lovecraft hit the funk pop nerd mainstream in the early 21st century they went the total opposite direction: we can't portray the true Cthulhu, so let's just ironically make him a cute cuddly toy.

Really goes to show that the human capacity commodifying things is truly the most powerful force in the universe; even more powerful than ancient gods.

Everything not written in the past 20 years is dated.
However, this lil clenched jaw nigga was so enrapt of past times that his stories and letters are an anachronistic joy and he is so caught in his own fantasies that there is hardly anything like it out there. His writings become more enjoyable the more you learn about how he sees the world.

>> No.22479592

Lovecraft was conscious and even proud of the fact that his manner of speaking and his general outlook belonged to a previous century. He wrote something along the lines in a letter, claiming he had the diction of a man from the 18th century or something. I think it adds to the appeal of his work, because it is obvious that his style of writing isn't affectation. It is consistent and despite being criticised as a pulp writer I think he actually writes very well even though he lapses into occasional self-parody, e.g., constant references to a gibbous moon.

Personally, I enjoy Lovecraft because I see his 'evil corrupt fish alien miscegenation' type horrors as multiculturalism.
Simple as. Not rayciss, just dont like em. Frfr no cap.

Multicult is the Lovecraftian cult. Multicultural miscegenation is Lovecraftian miscegenation. This is true horror. This shit is seriously fucking horrific. And the great cosmos, so vast and infinite, just doesnt fucking care. The fact that space is infinite, and this tiny little planet is getting less and less triple digit IQ races, whole continents becoming brown mud full of HIV and shamanic barbaric HIV cargo cult of civilization...
This is Lovecraftian to me. No other author resonates.

How the fuck are his works dated? If anything, they're more relevant than ever before.

>> No.22480019

the titles of his novels except for iconic ones like call of ctulhu all sound the same and don't correlate with the plot, I've given up trying to remember what's the difference between "the lingering fear" and "the terror at the doorstep"
also too many of his characters are too sceptical and it gets annoying when you read "a giant alien tentacle just crawled out of my anus, I must've eaten something wrong" for the tenth time

I've read six of his books so far and while I have enjoyed them and while I do think he's a great writer, I do think he gets way more praise than he deserves. Like I said, I think he's a great writer, but people treat him like he's a god walking among men when it comes to writing. One of the things that I don't like about his writing is the quotes he'll have his characters say, they always feel clunky and cringe, for example, in the book The Outsider, one of the characters says "Tough titty says the kitty" and it hurts to read. That might just be a me thing though.

matter of fact, which I ony knew the Cthulhu drawing, I found he also illustrated a bunch of his creations.

I do get you in what cosmic horror aims to be and gets to be in some cases, but ineffability is rough to get into words, and there's materiality in the words whatsoever.
