The Best and the Brightest by Halberstam
Mostly focused on the policy decisions of JFK’s cabinet and LBJ’s cabinet (there was quite a bit of overlap) wound up getting deeper and deeper into a quagmire.

I've heard this book is illuminating and that its operational theory (i.e. common sense deferring to the credentials of experts) is a prime motivating factor to many other US military involvements from the mid century onward.

Truong Nhu Tang's A Vietcong Memoir. He was a leader of the Vietcong's underground civilian government and describes life as a VC guerilla in the jungles. After the war he left the country becasue of disagreements with Hanoi.
