That funnily enough

The last book I finished was The Big U by Neal Stephenson. Meh. The first half was enjoyable but then it just devolved into stupid.

you realize that stephenson himself has more or less disowned the book, right? and that the only reason it's still in print is because people were spending ridiculous amounts of money on the few original copies and stephenson felt bad that they were wasting so much money on such a shitty book so he brought it back into print?

It was either a collection from Maupassant or Gordon Lish's "What I Know So Far."

Honestly, I can't remember.

it was ok I guess. I feel like I'd have enjoyed it more if it didn't make me want to punch every character, especially the narrator.

Lords of the Sea by John Hale. Great little book about the history of Athenian thallasocracy, used it a bunch for an essay I wrote this semester. I'd definitely recommend it if you're at all in to history because some of the naval commanders they had were just batshit awesome. Look up Phormio and Ephialtes if you have the time.

Yeah, the characters aren't sympathetic at all - they're 2 dimensional even. McEwan is a really good plotter though and I love his prose.
