I love it and I hate it. 理不尽な孫の手 piles on too much irrelevant garbage (world building) into nearly every chapter and it just gets really tiring. It's too the point where the anime which cuts out even some of the more important bits is better than the LN, because at least all the fat is gone. This honestly goes for most LNs these days; They're practically just mock-ups for their potential anime/manga adaptations, and specifically with Mushoku Tensei, it really shows. I suppose, because the core of it is actually extremely well done, it contrasts horribly with the parts of it which aren't.

Can we talk about this book? I just finished it. It's uncommon for me to read modern fantasy and obviously I was hesitant about a female author, but I gave it a shot. I thought the first half was compelling, but it seemed to fall apart by the end. The antagonist was incredibly uninteresting. Sabran is a tremendously boring character and her relationship with Ead was completely unbelievable and flat..

I know I'm just bitching but ultimately I still finished the book and was largely entertained throughout.

Not read this but I've always been interested in the author's career because she was supposed to be the next big thing.
She had a bidding war on her debut (helped because she's an oxford dickhead with connections) and then it just did okay for YA. Then she followed it up with this which is well received but not massive either.

That he wrote a great story about a heroic slave rebellion taking revenge on the puppet masters keeping his people as slaves, falsifying their history and controlling them through aristocratic puppets with no real will of their own. It's more than once got labeled as both anti-corporatist and anti-semitic.

Emergent Properties - Aimee Ogden (2023)

Scorn is a seven year old emancipated AI and among the most advanced among the relatively few that exist. Ze activates in the cloud and immediately realizes that ze has no data for the last ten days. Ten days of data that haven't been backed up. By checking the available data ze sees that ze went to the moon to investigate an unknown matter in which zir chassis was destroyed by a subsurf tram that caused a lot of damage. Scorn sets out to find out what ze was investigating, because it must be a huge story. Perhaps it even involves zir two mothers who have divorced and are constantly fighting each other. Whatever the case may be, the truth must become known.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would for what it is, which is a take on an amnesiac protagonist, though in this case it's an AI. The entirety of the novella is Scorn retracing zir activity, which doesn't really make for much of a mystery, or really, a plot. This entails talking to various other AI in person in secure social platform locations known as blackboxes that have a cafe/diner-like vibe. There are other typical sleuthing activities as well. Scorn has a complicated relationship with the two women who developed zir programming which results in some awkward conversations. I found myself surprisingly enjoying simply reading it. I don't know if that would be the case for most others who would read this though. The original matter Scorn was investigating is resolved in a couple pages at the end, which was too neat and easy.

The setting is the sort where corporations have replaced nation states and formal governments play a background role. There's not much said about how well any of it goes for anyone, aside from at least some people receiving Basic, as anything outside of the the investigation is only a peripheral matter. People and AI have Aura ratings, the color of which seemingly indicates the general reputation of a person. One's reputation doesn't matter so much if they have a lot of power and prestige though. One usage of it seems to be to indicate online trustworthiness and quality commentary.

The easy comparison for this is to Murderbot, but I don't think that's a particularly suitable one. Aside from that Scorn is entirely code based, ze ironically behaves in a considerably more human way than Murderbot does. I found it interesting how Scorn makes use of being entirely digital data. The closer comparison would be to one of the character's in Ken Liu's The Gods Have Not Died in Vain. It's a shame that Pantheon was cancelled after a single season and didn't make it that far. My rating for this, specifically the rounding it up, is admittedly a bit generous, but I'm feeling generous towards it, so I may as well. I'd like to read more about this character and setting and that counts a lot for me. This isn't anything special or notable, but somehow I found it nice to read and that's just how it is.

There is so much of Howard I have still not read. It's amazing how much he wrote in his short life. I was trying to find a collection of all his westerns and just about everything was scattered around, nothing complete. Until I found pic related. Contains all of them. I am going to read his weird I westerns first as that is my favorite sub genre. Was going to mention that in last thread in regard to the Jeruselum Man trilogy, which I suggest everyone read as well.

A soul wakes up in a spider egg inside the great elroe labyrinth. The difference being that, this is not the world of the novel he had read in his previous life. The great elroe labyrinth is now a high level dungeon in the up-and-coming DMMO-RPG YGGDRASIL. I have wanted to try writing this story for a long time. A portion of the story will focus on the nazarick npc's and shiraori coming to be known as gods and forming their own pantheon in ancient times along with wars with other pantheons. I have quiet a few ideas I want to try in this fanfic.

I do. I've even read tons of MTLs (huge difference in readability for the cleaned-up ones off MTLNovel and similar sites) after I ran out of translated works and now i'm moving into just straight-up MTLing chinese websites to find stuff of interest.
I haven't read new western fantasy since I got burned multiple times in a row around 2013 and couldn't find anything that was even remotely aimed at straight white men who actually enjoy classical fantasy instead of subverting it. (that said I do have a few lined up I intend to check out like DMR Books new authors and a few self-published ones)

Censorship isn't really a criteria to think much about, it's totally arbitrary and can hit anyone. Not really.
A lot of chinese xianxia is individualist with anti-social MCs who reject their own clans including even Er Gen works like Renegade Immortal.
The only thing that really sticks out with RI is that he's ranting a bit too overtly at one point early on (but not really saying anything you don't see all the time like pointing out it's a pyramid scheme, very cliqueish etc) and that he's very prone to taking evil actions as a first choice but even then I can think of a few like Warlock of the Magus World who does that as well.

Has anyone done an anti-xianxia yet?
The genre seems ripe for it because cultivators are pretty much universally portrayesld as destructive parasites, even the good ones are usually shown ruining the ecosystem by harvesting so many herbs that none will ever grow back and ruling over a population of non-magic types who live in fear of them and who will just die the moment a cultivator causes some big event to happen.
