Taught me the importance of using a thesaurus. He also has a brilliant imagination.

A poor mans Kafka?

One of the greatest writers to have ever lived, its just too bad his stuff feels stale because every horror writer has been ripping him off for almost a hundred years.

I bet you're a really boring, pretentious person irl and enjoy spending your time reading classic lit.

>> No.2241024

You can't make a broad assumption like that based on his disliking of one author. There's no reason we can't be civilized invdividuals.

>> No.2241030

i like lovecraft, but the short stories are very predictable, and he relied a little too much on describing things as "unknowable" or "indescribable" and so on... they're a nice fun read, though, and i do like the novella-type stuff

If you like Lovecraft then you will probably enjoy Ambrose Bierce also. If I could make a couple suggestions:

You mean too bad that is actually what happened, I still like his shit.

>> No.2241066

I like his weird stories and the deliberately antique prose. He was (and still is) a great inspiration for the whole genre.

>> No.2241068

>>2241058

I'm not disputing it happened, just the fact that it taints your view of him.

>> No.2241070

The one in OP's pic is the only right choice.

There's another collection of his by the same publisher, but Necronomicon has all the essentials.

>> No.2241073

Lovecraft took a massive shit on the necronomicon. It was meant to be a magick guide for exp-
Who am I kidding. You guys don't give a fuck.
Lovecraft is bad. Like Stephen King bad.

>> No.2241075

>>2241073

yeah like totally dude bro fists all round.

Care to explain why the think Lovecraft is bad?

>> No.2241077

Now if you do not want to pick up that hard bound copy. You could just pick up The Call of Cthulhu and Other Weird Stories: (Penguin Classics ). In that volume it has all the big ones. It also has end notes and the stories that are printed in the Penguin Classics version are the definitive versions.

Because it's mere hedonistic entertainment ment only to pass time and not spark up internal or external debate. It's not bad bad. But it's not good good. Ya' know?

>> No.2241087

So is 4chan

>> No.2241092

>>2241078

You're implying it's bad because it's intended for entertainment? Well i guess that says something about you as a person, you feel like you need to put your oh so important opinion into everything. Great writers are the ones that allow you to read in awe of their genius, which in this case is Lovecrafts imagination.

>> No.2241099

>>2241087
False. I've found new perspectives that I could not even imagine, not to mention the influx of emotions, honest and frenetic laughs, and some other shit.
>>2241092
Chill your pants, we don't need to make this personal. It's not bad. It's good. But it's a fraudulent type of good. Lovecraft does not play with the plot or innovates whatsoever. His technique is good. He's a good writer.

But even Orwell has more political implications or relevance outside the made up universe of his work. Again, it's not bad. But it's kinda simple. It's good.

>> No.2241106

>>2241099

Yes, he's good. Not bad, which is what you said. I'll admit he's not THE BEST, his writing style isn't that intricate. I'm defending him because i enjoy his imagination, he obviously has a wonderful mind.
