What’s the deal with some people into literature, film, and music to emphasize their taste in more obscure title?

None of the stuff here is related to that because 95% of discussion here is the same handful of books with 5% esoteric mysticism texts.

because obscurity of consumed media (theoretically) correlates with knowledge of mentioned media, which is this correlated with being, as they say, "cultured" (which feeling is obviously desired by many)

I agree that if you read more obscure books you probably have read more but that doesn’t mean those obscure books are better than popular ones. There are many writers and critics who have “entry level” books here as among their favorite, but some anons look down on those same popular books

The graphic novel "Why I Hate Saturn" by Kyle Baker had a hilarious aside on "obscurism".
The rest of the graphic novel is totally worth it, too.

>"My taste is so amazing that my favorite books are the books universally regarded the best!"
That makes you a pretty boring reader. The more read the more you will find those weird books that might not be the best written ones but they might be the ones that seem like they were written just for you.

I'd argue that a certain level of media literacy is needed to truly appreciate some books, so the average person can't appreciate them to the degree that an afficionado does, and so these books become obscure.

It means he probably has more friends than you do.

But why are you so butthurt by my well-developed tastes?
Is that because it reminds you that you wasted all that time playing vidya and watching college football when I was enjoying the pinnacles of aesthetic experience?
Not everything is on the surface, anon. I know "obscure" books because I actually enjoy literature and finding new things.
Please take your resentment somewhere else.

Anything that hasn't been made into a movie is probably not worth reading.
