Has anyone here actually taken up the challenge of writing a NOVEL??

I have experience in writing short stories and it was almost always spontaneous for me, but you can't write a book in a moment of creative inspiration

it requires a long and dedicated preparation. How does one know when he's ready to start writing???

when you are in front of a computer and can write - or have a pen and paper for that matter. My experience is that the first draft is chaotic and disgusting, but disgusting like vomit for that what I do. I vomit on the page until I'm satisfied and then I start putting things in order for the second draft. also, you the writing general for these questions if you actually want replies.

I'm 71,000 words into my first novel. Got another 30-40k before I finish. I spent like a month on an outline - nothing complicated, just little blurbs that came to me as I went about my day of where I wanted to go with the story or details about the characters or just lines of dialogue. I spent a day putting it together into something more cohesive and once I made sure I had enough to work with, I went from there.
