No, No I won't. I'll jump right into whatever the fuck interests be it Spinoza, kierkegaard, Camus or whatever and if need be look up secondary sources or simply google for explanations about whatever philosopher they're responding to.

Looking at you fags argue has shown me that starting with the Greeks doesn't give you better understanding.

For me, it’s start with William James

>> No.22378071

>>22378066
Start with Descartes so you can see why the Greeks are retarded. They are only given precedence because they are the first to do it.

>> No.22378076

>>22378066
You should start with aristotle lol. Fuck all other Greeks tho

Explain why you think this lol that's so dumb

Hell, read YA for all anyone cares. Just if you started with the Greeks you might learn not to be a frogposting faggot.

You can grasp Philosophers ideas without reading there works lol

I am not reposting the entire thing but it was in Rules for the Mind maybe 4 where he says that the Greeks only seemed important because they were the first to do stuff and that the mathematicians for example (he lists Peppus and Diophantus by name) wouldn’t even be able to do the simple algebra of his time. Most of what seems impressive is simply the greeeks we’re first to do it. Descartes being father of the enlightenment hated the Greeks intensely.

>> No.22378100

>>22378093
Understanding algebra doesn't make you a better Philosopher ffs

>> No.22378102

>>22378100
It isn’t just algebra. Most of what was difficult for them should be considered simple or even backwards to us.

And btw. I fuck teenage twinks on a regular basis aside from frogposting and there's nothing you could do about it either.

But we could say the same of descartes

>> No.22378120

>>22378104
Aristotle and the scholastics held back the world for a long time and your definition of “smarter than” is debatable. 99% of people today are by definition smarter than someone who thought fish spawned out of mud.

>> No.22378125

>>22378119
Descartes predicted that and he didn’t believe himself to be infallible or the last word. I was citing his philosophical ideas for why the Greeks are not necessary.

He used to torture animals because he didn't think they had inner beings

There's so many descartes would have thought that we know would think were stupid. There will be things in the future that we know think of as obvious that will be seen as entirely wrong by future generations and so will future generations on from them. How can philosophy ever be taken seriously if the humans who write it don't have a perfect understanding of science?

>> No.22378141

>>22378125
No philosophy is necessary, you don't have to think about things

>How can philosophy ever be taken seriously if the humans who write it don't have a perfect understanding of science?

The discussion was whether the Greeks had it all figured out not if enlightenment thinkers did.

When did I say they had it all figured out? How was that the discussion we were having?

The underlying faults in both Plato and Aristotle should preclude them from being anymore than the forerunners of current thought. I hope for instance, you don’t think semen is kept in the brain, that there is an “ideal form of a chair” or that all elderly people who procreate should be executed.

>> No.22378176

>>22378125
That's just a really stupid way of looking at philosophy. Descartes thought dumb shit too. Philosophical ideas are just ideas it doesn't matter what other things the people who wrote them thought.

>> No.22378186

But like what does them thinking have to do with their ideas around philosophical concepts?

Two of those are philosophical concepts and also their thoughts on nature are relevant because someone with incorrect ideas of nature isn’t the best basis for your opinions on any other topic or it shouldn’t be at least.

>> No.22378195

>>22378191
But descartes was wrong about stuff to do with nature?

>> No.22378196

>>22378188
I don’t. Descartes isn’t infallible but he is important for being the foundation of the modern world through the enlightenment. Also his criticisms of the Greeks are entirely justified and relevant to this thread. Anything else you mention amounts of whataboutism.

Also the only reason I brought him up was his opinion of the Greeks. Anything else is just whataboutism.

Okay then that is even better to not care about the Greeks. Better yet, go back to your “ideal chair” which totally exists in a parallel dimension.

Inflicted? Yes but he also despised them quite a bit. He has a whole rant against them early in Rules for the Mind and also his break away from Queen Christina was because of her praise for Aristotle iirc. Either way, I was just quoting the one section of Rules as making a good point and then Mr GOTCHA made it “b but Descartes said dumb things toooo”
