Maybe, although for its first year &amp had monthly releases. The editor wants to take a break for September anyway, and we’ve discussed switching to bimonthly releases after that. But who’s to say?

>>22344249
&amp has historically had the approach of basically publishing everything that’s sent in, good or bad. No one’s work was prioritized because of their connection to the editor. No good-quality entries were discarded, although our approach to putting submissions is is a bit disorganized, so sometimes things slip through the cracks and end up being missed, or get saved for future issues due to space constraints and timing. Whatever submissions didn’t end up in 018 will be used for 019.

I hate to say it, but I agree. I was shocked by how bad the story was. His prose was rife with grammatical errors and his syntax was incredibly stilted. The dialogue was wooden, the characters were flat, and he included a ton of uninteresting and pointless detail. The whole thing was trite, sentimental, boring, and generic.

The story also just felt overly long: he included tons of details about the character’s upbringing and his parents’ history that were irrelevant to the plot. All the stuff about his father’s church service in the beginning could’ve been brought in later to delve into the idea of religious guilt or hang-ups about having sex and flesh out the character’s psyche, but he did nothing with it. I’d give the story a 2/10, and that’s generous. But no amount of constructive criticism will help him; he’ll just dismiss anyone who dislikes his work as a “crab” or a “hater” who doesn’t comprehend his genius. Woolston needs to dedicate the time he spends shilling to actually reading and writing, or he’ll never improve.

Poems were a solid opener, Henry Montchamp. Prologue was my favorite, followed by the one about Raskolnikov. Nice tempo and topics.

The Listening Post is an interesting thought experiment. I'm not studied in Buddhist literature but I had a good time over lunch thinking about perception and how it affects my own life.

In general I didn't like the Schizo Cantos because I don't like free verse poetry. I can tell they were written competently. I just can't make sense of them.

Same for Gemini. I can tell it was written well, but I couldn't find a story to hold on to. Pretty design, though. My favorite background in the magazine.

Fremantle had an actual story but the formatting was all over the place. Apostrophes instead of quotation marks, or the reverse, and ending quotes with periods but continuing on with a sentence tag are just inexcusable lazy formatting mistakes. I don't know if this is a Lewis or Editor thing but tighten that shit up. Not a bad story, anyways. A sobering tale of youthful expectations and mistakes captured well.

Waffle!... I'm not sure what to say about it. Maybe it works better as a screenplay.

Have@It was cruel and I liked the style. Poor fucker. He's got nothing to look forward to, does he?

Fucking Faggot got me to laugh with the BBC comment. We've all been this guy, just watching shit burn for fun. Cool addition.

Good Samarithan: now that was a fucking story! Long but damn it was good. Love that Leo is the only one who forgives his brother, despite everyone else being Christian.

The 9-11 story was real inventive. I like the suspense added toward the end with the timeline. If it had been a paragraph of events happening it wouldn't have been as good. Liked it, very nice.

The Tent was great. I could easily see this one act play being done at a community theater on a very small budget. Just need a good sound system and the right lighting coordination! Nice job Daniel. I hope to read another sometime.

And lastly, the Classifieds were fucking funny. They always are. The baby shoes and homeless guy ones got me lol'ing.

Not a bad issue of &amp at all. Loved the design and the color patterns. Please fix in story formatting next time. Good job.

I'm sorry to say this Woolston, but you're not gonna make it. You've failed. It strikes me that this fag rag doesn't know what it wants to be. Visually designed as rebellious, its pieces are instead safe, stale, boilerplate, and middling--betraying the fact the edtior wants to be 'a weaal editor' and so only accepts crud.
Tell me--if I wanted to write mainstream works, why on earth would I submit to this and not a real magazine? At least with a real magazine I would get a real writing credit out of it.
So you've made a magazine for pussies, basically.
You're arrogant too, which is a problem. Editors can either be arrogant or a pussy but they can't be both.
You turned your nose up at my submission and made a disgusting remark about it, then two days later I hosted it myself and got ten times the views your rag will ever get. Actually, it's probably more than that, but I'll be generous to you. If you'd known my view count you would have been licking the arches of my feet from here to Timbuktu, that is for certain. You won't know now, not ever, because I don't need any clout chasers pretending they like my work to get an 'in'. So you see, it was you who failed the test, not me.
Good luck with your soiled diaper of a magazine. It doesn't deserve to take up space on my bookshelf.

>Seven Poems, Montchamp
I confess that I am ill-equipped to judge this. The construction seems suitable, the flow is quite good, the language is tickling, but emotion is at the core of poetry and guilt is the one thing I am constitutionally unable to make myself feel.
Personal Quandary/10, probably an 8 if I were capable of connecting with it.

>Anonymous Haiku
I laughed. Dark Ken-core. Ken-punk? Enhanced by the background significantly.
5/10

>The Listening Post
Informative, light and pleasant, posessed of genuine understanding and empathy. Reads a little like an excerpt from a Religious Studies thesis that the advisor enjoyed reading but still thoroughly redmarked because it had too much personality.
7/10

>Shizo Cantos
I think a few unintentional line breaks might have gotten introduced in formatting no.50 and 99, but I actually rather like the effect they had on 50. I do also always love the inventive ways you guys use the symbols in layout.

>Gemini
Cheesy in a poignant way. Cliche in an honest way. The sort of window I like to peek through from time to time because I can appreciate the world on the other side of it, even if I don't want to live there.
7/10

>You'll Always Remember Fremantle
>and Hobart is completely pointless
fuckin lol
A strange sort of Australian blandness. I somehow read all the way through before realizing it was going on a little long. I kept wanting a war to start so Smithy could get blown up and Jones could get grown up. Needed another editing pass.
A really quite solid 6/10

>Untitled Poem
Cheesy and cliche in the ways Gemini wasn't. Flow's got some hitches and those rhymes will NOT pull bitches.
3/10

>Waffle!
Amateurish in a barely endearing way. Reads like a highschool sophomore's attempt to imitate Douglas Adams. Tenses all OVER the damn place, basic errors abound, please read your own stuff before submitting it. You gain a point because I laughed at 'Oh, it's a giant flying toaster.'
3/10

>Have@It
Brutal like a homemade hatchet.
8/10

>Fucking Faggot
Witty, nice and crude, with a little nugget of real thought to chew on.
7/10

>Good Samarithan
Chillingly honest, vibrating with understanding of the human mind and how children understand and process the world. Double barrels of early 2010s buckshot straight to the face.
9/10

>THE ANNUAL SEPTEMBER ELEVENTH COMMEMORATIVE MEMORIAL REENACTMENT AND CANDLELIGHT VIGIL
Offbeat, funky fresh, comedic both in its frankness and tragedy. Has a sheen like Napoleon Dynamite and The Royal Tenenbaums melted into one ingot.
I thought the prose was a little bumpy until switching my mental narrator from my default to your cadence and tone from the &amp Reviews video. After that it flowed effortlessly—such is the undeniable presence of your voice in this piece.
8/10

>The Tent
A splendidly depressing little romp. I'd go see a performance. Could maybe use some tightening up, but still a good show, chap.

I don't know who Lewis Woolston is or care about the drama but his piece in this issue was everything I hate about contemporary fiction minus anything at all acting in mitigation thereof. The sparse, clumsy prose of Woolston would be me forgivable if it had anything interesting to say. This, somehow, isn't the case. I kept waiting for the piece to open up in some way, to start breathing. Finally, finding neither, I quit all hope of either and simply looked for a pulse. Reading Woolston is like waking up after a long night of drinking and finding yourself in bed with a dirty, smelly Australian who keeps trying to tell you—in dull, monotonous tone that never rises above a soft, nasal whisper or diverts from its rhythm—things you don't care about. You just wish he'd shut the fuck up and let you go back to sleep, or that he would at least brush his fucking teeth.

It's so amazing to me that so many anons have seen what Gardner has done and decided that they could copy him that easily. Too bad, too late, Gardner was here first and everyone knows that, and everyone who comes afterwards has just made themselves look like an ungrateful little shit because they always want to dunk on 4chan's most famous author. I guess they think it's cool or contrarian or whatever? It's hilarious to me, really, and sad, how pathetic you guys are. You let Gardner blaze a trail and create a brand and then you all swooped in like seagulls and tried to kick him out, despite the fact that no one ever reads your shit and no one ever will. I'm not surprised that Gardner has had to resort to some "underhanded" tactics, you guys will literally never rest until you've taken every single one of his readers away and if that doesn't work you're going to fucking ruin the whole goddamned thing for everyone. People want to read Horror's Call, and what's crazy is that Gardner was there encouraging and inspiring all of you when you were trying to get started and everyone is just pissed because he wouldn't give them advertising space, which was his idea so he doesn't have to share it with anyone. If you want to advertise on 4chan then maybe you should have taken the fucking deal when Gardner wanted to trade shoutouts but you all pathetic ungrateful little shits. >Seven Poems
Quite quite good, especially in some its imagery and word-magic; I particularly liked "Unjustification" (tho the "barracks" line's meter seems off, and, ironically, like so much English verse, this one is quite devoid of feminine rhymes, unlike, say, "Tony Suprano"), "Untitled" (Auster), I and II (I might say adamant instead of diamondoid, though I guess, besides alliteration, that awkward oi has a charm).

>The Listening Post
At first I was not quite sure what genre this was; as, by the second section, it more clearly turns into essay, I found it overall not very captivating, but it's still sort of interesting in form and opening.

>Schizo Cantos
In word and image the "schizo"-mystical does not here surpass that of Seven Poems imo, but good ntl.

>Fremantle
Props to monsieur Woolston for being a (twice!) publisher author, but if this 'un is anything to go by it's (I say concurring with others itt) rather a disappointment. It's just rather boring and lends well to skimming, if not abandoning outright; the bit with the prostitute had my attention, the rest did not. I did read another piece by Woolston, the one about the Professor (?) in Tooky's (?): there, like here, the writing is not "the point", and I surely glided over quite a few sentences, but there the bulk of the story took up much more of my interest... Also (this one here): rather punctuationally incompetent.

Just finished the mag. This magazine needs to have a lower limit to the quality of stuff it will publish. Some of these pieces are so badly written they're impossible to read. It's mind-boggling that an editor would slog through Good samaritain and think it was good to go - there's just nothing right with it. Obviously same for Woolston, which is unspeakably bad.

The Listening Post was written coherently and felt polished, if a little dense, same with the 9-11 story and the play. Gemini scrapes through if its just an exercise in purple prose. But everything else is so shit it's aggravating. I feel like I've been robbed of my time.

But I'm not Gardner, Gardner being Frank Gardner, the author of the Call of Horror series of books, he thought. 'I'm not Gardner,' he explained to the anon, who had unjustly accused him of being Gardner for some reason that he didn't know. Reason, he thought wryly, that was the basis for rational thought. And insanity was its opposite, just like how Peace was the opposite of War in Tolstoy's classic. Maybe the anon had given into insanity and that was why he had asked that question. Waking up from the dream he realized something was off about the room. It looked like a kid's room. His son was there. It was his room. The boy looked at him and asked 'Daddy, why are you crying?" He didn't know why he was crying, perhaps they weren't tears at all. "I don't know why I'm crying," he told the boy. "Perhaps they aren't tears at all."
They leave the creepy room behind and descent into the maze of their large house's hallways, sort of like the maze which Daedalus builds for his boss and gets trapped in with his son after building it. That's what it felt like right now, with his son, in the maze of his house.
"It feels like we're trapped in the maze," he told his son.
"Yes daddy," said the boy.
It felt almost like the thought experiment in Godel, Escher, Bach by Douglas Hofstadter where Daedelus' maze is reimagined as a game in which you pass through a series of rooms each with a different set of rules to get out, and the rules refer to other rooms, which interlinks all the rooms together. "This is like Hofstadter," said the Boy to his father as they reached the third room which was green like his son's eyes. Inside the room was the boy's grandmother, and maggots were spilling out of her mouth and eyes.
"Ew!" cried the boy and ran to take cover behind his father at the shocking sight.
"It's just our imagination," the father explained to his boy, but the grandmother and her maggots seemed so real that it frightened him deeply. "This must be a clue to opening one of the other rooms," he explained to the Boy, "that is how the game works in Godel, Escher, Bach by Douglas Hofstadter. The Boy gazed at him from his green eyes. He'd never heard of that book before.

>&amp releases monthly issues
>The quality is shit!
>&amp goes on hiatus
>The magazine is inconsistent and lazy!

Like, give it a fucking rest. If you feel like people are hugboxing then come in and post some harsh, specific critiques to provide a constructive reality check. If you disliked the issue then say what you disliked about it and provide specific, useful criticism instead of just throwing out vague insults. If you think the submissions for this issue were shitty then submit something good yourself for the next one. If you dislike the namefagging then submit something anonymously. Seething and bitching endlessly does nothing and helps no one.
All it does is lower the quality of the discourse even further and create drama.

The disgust toward the recent circlejerks is not an unpopular opinion. The inclusion of these awful Woolston stories and the obvious asspatting seems to have been the straw that broke the camels back on this. Personally, I've sat silently with this opinion for the last few issues now, hoping that these stumblings were just some unfair pattern recognition on my part, but now I see, you are in the wrong here. Ari/Cur is correct. Typesetting is nothing to gawk at, and by everything that is holy, neither is any aspect of Woolston.

Virtually every comment about Woolston’s story in this thread (including my own) has been negative, and deservedly so. &amp publishes anything, even if it’s shit. I’ve read every issue, some more than once, and &amp has published a *lot* of horrendous shit over the years, much of it just as bad or even worse than Woolston. Why should Woolston’s shitty story alone be rejected just because he’s a known namefag/shill?

Even the anons who’ve praised the issue in this thread still have been critical of some of the submissions that were included; it hasn’t just been hugboxing with no criticism to balance it out. If you disliked the issue, that’s fine; I myself felt that it was a fairly weak issue overall, and have expressed that opinion in this thread more than once. That doesn’t mean that other anons who came away with a different opinion are automatically ass-patting. Taste in literature is to some extent individual (though of course not entirely subjective) and certain pieces will no doubt be polarizing. People are allowed to enjoy &amp and praise the stories, or appreciate the design and formatting. If you want to criticize then criticize to your heart’s content, but explain what you disliked specifically instead of just vaguely bitching. Don’t dismiss everyone who disagrees with your criticism as part of a circlejerk—as long as they can back them up, their opinions are just as valid as your own.

>> No.22348074

>>22347999
Checked. Woolston was appealing to the Lamp team constantly and after snubbing his submissions for over two issues we finally caved and printed his story. Was it good? Probably not, but it’s official, printed in 200 DPI on glossy ISO A4. The next time a subpar piece of literature finds a home in the pages of this unflinching publication, I’ll be sure to hang myself and the noose I swung in on.

>> No.22348097

>>22348063
I'm not referring to every lukewarm review of Woolston's story as an example of contortionist selfsuck. If you found it to be a 5/10 for whatever reason, and you have the ability to verbalize that reasoning, then go for it. I don't care. You're allowed to be wrong. What I take issue with are these transparent posts that debase every negative review with an image of Ari's portrait while shouting to the sky such vagaries as SOVL or "lofi prose".

>> No.22348149

>>22348097
Yeah, the “lofi prose” comment was cringe-inducing, I agree with you there. But my point still stands that the vast majority of feedback on Woolston’s story has been negative or lukewarm. It’s not as though this thread has been full of people raving about his prose. I’ve always welcomed criticism, provided that it’s substantiative, and have provided plenty of harsh critiques myself in past threads. My issue isn’t with people giving negative reviews, it’s with people complaining about the quality of these threads and dismissing the whole thing as a circlejerk based on the actions of a few isolated posters, while reducing the quality of the discussion even further by constantly bitching.

My understanding, having witnessed these past few issues first hand, is that Unreal and anti-Unreals are two extremes. Unreal gives hyperbolic praise towards everything that is posted and anti-Unreals give hyperbolic negative reviews to everything that is posted. When they come to a head, both devolve into doxing one another and dramafagging.
