You will never be a real writer. You have no talent, you have no insight, you have no focus. You are a delusional man twisted by vanity and self-deceit into a crude mockery of literary potential.

All the “validation” you get is two-faced and half-hearted. Behind your back people mock you. Your parents are disgusted and ashamed of you, your “friends” laugh at your awkward "wit" behind closed doors.

Audiences are utterly repulsed by you. Thousands of years of literary analysis have allowed readers to sniff out pseuds with incredible efficiency. Even hacks who “sell” seem uncanny and unnatural to a reader. Your sentence structure is a dead giveaway. And even if you manage to get a few people to open your KDP sample, they’ll turn tail and bolt the second they get a glimpse of your banal, droll prologue.

You will never be happy. You wrench out a fake smile every single morning and tell yourself it’s going to be ok, but deep inside you feel the depression creeping up like a weed, ready to crush you under the unbearable weight.

Eventually it’ll be too much to bear - you’ll buy a rope, tie a noose, put it around your neck, and pull a DFW, still hoping until the last second that your suicide will lend a sense of depth to your work. It won't. Your parents will find you, heartbroken but relieved that they no longer have to think up compliments for your latest short story. They’ll bury you with a headstone marked with your birth name, and no passerby for the rest of eternity will ever know that you used to refer to yourself with two first initials. Your body will decay and go back to the dust, and all that will remain of your legacy is a selfpub that is unmistakably mediocre.

This is your fate. This is what you chose. There is no turning back.

luckily, narcissism is on the writer's side. writing is an inherently narcissistic or self-centered art. joyce had some piece of writing talking about the young wannabe author who was already, before even writing much, fantasizing about what the critics would say about his work after publication--no doubt an example coming from himself.

pretty much everybody who tries to be a 'great author' will fail. part luck, major part skill involved. most people don't cut it, especially the latter. but believing you will be the exception, delusionally and narcissistically, is probably a requirements for succeeding.

otherwise, fatalism is the greater part of nobility. it's why industrial warfare made war heroes even more venerated, not less. when skill is less of a component and survival is down to who sees and shoots first, or who happens to be or not to be in the path of an incoming shell, the whole thing becomes more harrowing, more awe-inspiring anyway. so if you think that, beyond skill, that success is a large part of luck, then think about that. plus you won't know if you don't try. so get to it.
