I'm writing a book on a controversial topic (I usually frequent /pol/) and I want to know how many citations are too many. I want the book to be well cited but I might have overdone it idk.

I showed a friend and he said the book is illegible with the amount of citations I added.

Literally every time you make an assertion that isn't personal anecdote or your clearly defined opinion.

Also good reputable sources for citations.

This is basic essay writing.

Citations are retarded. Especially if you’re outside the academic world, where “peer” review doesn’t matter or exist.

Use LaTeX you dunce.

Citations aren't meant to exhaustively prove your point, your point will be shat on by disingenuous midwits no matter what. Citations are meant to give the honest reader some places to follow up if they want to know more.

But what about people who are genuinely curious? Shouldn't I proide as many citations to thoroughly prove my point?

In line citations are used in scientific papers to refer to material you don't want to reintroduce in a short format. Even in experimental disciplines, books avoid using them because everything should follow reading the book, and references are pushed to autistic bibliographies at the end. Arguing about the sources should only be done if absolutely necessary or if it's the very point of the book.

It depends on the genre of book. In a historical or literary analysis you might have a bibliography that is 10% of the length of the work itself.
