The new translation is - from all reviews so far - the new definitive version.

the new one. op one. it’s the new definitive version. Katz is autistic about the russian language.

Dare I say something controversial? You might as well flip a coin here as whatever Dostoevsky wrote is 100x more significant than the translators, who both seem to have gotten his sentiments across more than adequately

there's no substantial difference at all, because the changes all amount to picking different words from the thesaurus, or a different preposition, or a different turn of phrase that does nothing except colour in the skies in an adjacent shade of blue. For example,
>He was one of those people with no sense who knew how to take very good care of his worldly affairs, and, apparently, not much else. (Katz)
>[He was] one of those muddleheaded people who still handle their own little business deals quite skillfully, if nothing else. (P&V)
Only one difference here effects the meaning, and that's the difference between "and, apparently, not much else," which shows the narrator has heard such things of Karamazov, and "if nothing else," which demonstrates his own opinion.
Here's another example, where Katz comes off much worse.
>Yet at the same time, all his life he continued to be one of the eccentrics in our district who was most lacking in sense. (Katz)
>At the same time he remained all his life one of the most muddleheaded madcaps in our district. (P&V)
As far as the original Russian goes, I don't know, nor care, for its style, as I'll never be its scholar, but, for English style, P&V comes off the more graceful with a little alliteration. Katz stumbles. If that's the closer approximate to Dostoevsky than P&V, then he really was mediocre.

I agree Garnett is good but what about the claims of her leaving out entire passages. I'm not trying to question Garnett's technicality, her sentences flow like a river and I assume it to be pretty faithful to the Russian original but leaving entire passages out doesn't sit right with me.

I received pic related as a birthday gift from a friend of mine and I was sure that my reading experience would be tainted by the translation and editing that would have to correspond to a cover such as this. Sure enough it was packed full of footnotes that served the only purpose of annoying the reader. Things like explaining the etymology of Goliadkin's name before we get a description of the character, commentary of works of art mentioned in the story (even to the point of spoiling the book- one footnote, on one of the pages that describe his visit to the doctor, mentioned his "declining mental state" long before it's established that this would be a major plot point), translation of *some* French or German words spoken etc.
I see something similar happening here. If you say "Yid" and have to explain that it's derogatory, you've done a poor job translating. Not that "kike" would have necessarily fit, but I would have thought that if you need a footnote to explain a concept as simple as antisemitism in Russia, maybe stick to commentaries and criticisms that no one wants to read.

Garnett is utter shit. She was an Englishwoman who had a mere hobbyists’ understanding of Russian. Read Nabokov’s lecture on how badly she misconstrues Tolstoy. One of the only bits of Nabo worth reading Imo

He literally rated Anna K and Death of Ivan Illyich as first and second greatest works of the 18th century respectively. He did hatw Dostoy but worshipped Tolstoy and read them both in the original Russian, not the English trans. Not to mention Garnett was the only translation available to him in the 40s so the accusation of contrarianism shows how foolish you look

>Pevear and Volokhonsky, who are married, work in an unusual fashion. She, a native Russian speaker, renders each book into entirely literal English. He, who knows insufficient Russian, then works on the rendering with the intention of keeping the language as close to the original as possible. What results from this attempt at unprecedented fidelity is a word-for-word and syntax-for-syntax version that sacrifices tone and misconstrues overall sense.
I would argue that you are the contrarian brother
