How do I become a famous writer in 2023? Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I need to be international celebrity famous, but I'd like to be able to afford an average, comfortable, middle-class lifestyle where I just write for a living. Is this possible in our 2023 modern world?

you have to write slop and somehow rise above all the other slop

YA, erotica, detective bullshit, anything pandering to 20s-40s year old women

Figure out how to constantly be in the news I'd assume. Build a persona and stir up gossip and controversy around it. D'annunzio went so far as to fake his own death.

TikTok poetry readings with a very high production value/scripting. You know, Rupi Kauer but high effort. + Pewdiepie reviews and guru cultivation status.

How about writing the 'breakfast at Tiffany's ' only the narrator is tranny from dimes square and the 'girl' that creeps in through firescape is a ftm tranny who was a fat cornfeed mama back there in south with her white husband and shebang of kids who are missing her.
And how they both smoke crack till dawn and talk about how BLM and that police should be kill.
And then the narrator proposes they should have sex BC they both non binary and gender fluid conscious but ftm denies her(him) so she(he) becomes jelly as hell.
And then ftm goes away and the other tranny gets sussy and salty and reports her (the ftm) to police.

Forget all delusions about writing high literature and start applying for jobs to write advertisements, and maybe lower your standards a bit.

Depends on what you want to write. Almost everything will have an audience, but the road to success will differ based on your targeted genre/age demographic. If you want to be a traditionally published novelist, it's worth noting that the average advance they pay authors has declined in recent years to about 2-10K and 70% of authors don't sell enough copies to receive royalties. Those who self-publish are typically even worse off. The writers who can make a living off writing alone are few and far between.

Copywriting is taking a big hit from LLMs.

Pretend to be non-white, non-male, or LGBT. Write absolute slop and post it on TikTok with high production value. The more bullshit the better, something along the lines of "YA Fantasy but all the characters are TRANS!" Suck the dick of other unironic writers of slop constantly. Shill, shill, shill. If you're not willing to do any of this, you have literally zero chance in 2023.

On a side note, don't trust literary agents. I've met with three of them personally and I can tell you definitively, hand to god, they don't know their ass from their elbow when it comes to literature. They are business people. You might say "No shit" or "That's to be expected" but not when they have fundamentally no understanding on any level of the product they are selling/representing. An agent asked me why my book didn't have xyz as it was set in a certain place at a certain time and I told her "That's not what my story is about. It has nothing to do with that." And she didn't seem to understand. But yet they publish absolute fucking clowns like Chuck Wendig and that Kaiju Preservation society guy. I'm so fed the fuck up. Traditional publishing should fucking burn.

Have an appealing image that publishers can hawk around. People mainly buy books for the cover and the name on the front now.

Other anons will hate this but, if you are a complete and total unknown, you should try to build a following on social media. Once you have some sort of following, maybe approach an agent and ask about representation, but I’d probably approach a talent agent rather than a literary agent.

A lot of new authors don’t understand the numbers. Averages are very low and disheartening and often causes people to give up, so I’m just going to throw those away because they’re pointless to worry about. Just know that only around 5,000 authors make at least $50k/year from book sales only. That doesn’t include other income streams, of course, just book sales.

What I’m saying is you should probably start an OnlyFans.
