why do you have a fav publisher? dont you think that’s meaningless brand-name consumerism

>> No.22307988

>>22307948
Different publishers have different translation, make their books out of different materials, include different introductions and prefaces, use different covers, cost different. Dont be silly

>> No.22308235

>>22307839
OSPREY publishing is still the best tho

is there really one publisher that always has the 'best' translations? i find that hard to believe

>> No.22308330

No, but Oxford is safe 80%

But what about the times where I'm looking for a book that Oxford doesn't have (Life and Fate, Kolyma Tales, some other Russian and German stuff)? Why follow one publisher when they might not have the book your looking for?

Absolutely the top tier along with Library of Weimerica.

I haven't read that Wharton, how is it?

>> No.22309230

>>22308251
No there isn't. But can't we all acknowledge that Everyman's library just has better translations than wordsworth editions. Among the top publishers it usually depends on who has the right to the best translations.

their books are so ugg tho (on the outside) (ON THE OUTSIDE)

Penguin has a bigger catalog, but the overall quality of Oxford is superior.

>Different translations
I don't read translations
>Different materials
I don't care
>Different introductions and prefaces
I don't read those

Oxford paper is superior to Penguin in my opinion, Penguin always has a rancid stink, Oxford smells nicer.

Nothing wrong with appreciating the craft, anon. But I get that for your smartphone and e-reader generation the "feel" of things has become an unapproacheable thing. You don't know how to touch a book, you don't know how to touch a woman, you don't know how to write with a pencil on paper or wind a watch. Just touching on a plain glass screen and images made by pixels. No wonder you're all fucked up.

Anon, do you have any developmental issues?
You buy it from another publisher.

Oxford paper is still crap, not much beyond pulp. It's fine for a cheap paperback.
Everyman's Library editions - at least those printed in Germany - are the best, if you're not a fan of bible paper.

Oftentimes Oxford is the best choice. They care about the content and it shows. However, they look too sterile on a shelf. Even if the artwork looks fine, it's the white spines and cover patches that ruin it all. Reminds me of non-fiction or academic texts. Why plain white? Any other colour would be more tasteful. Now imagine a book in a good movie. They always take either the original cover or something cool. Oxford would never appear in a movie because it's an eye-sore after all.
