Jean-Jacques Rousseau
He fled his home city when he was 16 and threw his passport away
He couldn't go back in because the city had walls that were guarded and he had no passport
He made a sacrifice because he hated the society he lived in
No
He was disappointed by the society he lived in
He had greater ideas

Vague but you've hooked me with the mystery. Tell me a place to start, if it's possible, that includes his written correspondance. I found it the most telling and the spark of my descent into Rimboudhole. Wallace Fowlies version offers both translation and original, of most poems and letters, and I DO plan to learn the French.

I started with reading a book about French philosophers that also said things about Rousseau and my instant thought was: gigabased. Basically he got constantly in fights with his other philosopher friends and sometimes he would go on 4chan master tier shizo rants but I don't mean on text I mean in real life. But he was also honoured by people like the King of France himself for the texts he read out in the palace of Versailles, our loud. He was even offered the opportunity of becoming a palace poet, an offer that he rejected. So proud was he.
Then I just found an edition of Emile, on education in French on the streets. In fact I didn't pick it up because of the author wich I didn't see in the beginning but because I found the cover image highly appealing. It was only after continuing reading the other book about philosophers that what I was holding in my hands was a book by Rousseau himself and yeah, I read the entire book and it was like some sort of classical Greek compendium of the world but from the 18th Century. I highly recommend it.

John Fowles. His prose is the most precise, evocative and relatable I've ever read. Every page of his practically, there's a line that makes me think "I've felt that before but never put it into words."

Henry Miller. I’m not sure if I’d get along with him in person but he’s that guy that yanks you by the arm to get you where you need to be

I’ve always felt DH Lawrence was a kindred spirit
