Getting it in Early Edition

Dissonance (Unbound #1) by Nicoli Gonnella

[Story]

At the request of his sister, David has broken out of a post-relationship fugue and attended a stranger's yacht party. Immediately stumbling upon a woman who's been drugged, he turns to the staff for help... only to learn they're privy to a rape party. Discovering his sister, he tries to distract the frat boys and allow her and her friends to escape only to be thrown overboard into stormy waters. He awakens on the beach of another world, with a SYSTEM INITIALIZING screen in his vision and the chance at a new start.

[Main Character]

Upon engaging with the System, David is given the chance to choose a name for himself. He decides upon Felix Nevarre before a system glitch occur, setting his race as a 'Nimh' and Omen to 'The Magician'. Struggling to survive at first, Felix's extraordinary luck allows him to avoid close calls by inches time and time again. He leaves his old life behind, forgetting his sister and the yacht in favor of this Continent and its denizens. A short time later he's able to save an adolescent griffon - our mandatory pet character, Pit.

[Progression Mechanics]

Every race is born with an Omen, represented by the Major Arcana of Tarot. Specific races will drift towards specific omens, with fae races like Nimh or Elves being magically inclined towards The Magician. Humans will often pursue Strength, etc. While most races are constrained to learning only a few major skills in their lifetime, Felix is considered an 'Unbound' and learns skills as if a player in a game. Everything he does accrues a skill rank gain, from 'Acid Resistance' to 'Exploration'. With limitless potential and power, all Felix has to do is survive.

[Final Thoughts]

It's shit. It's boring and takes so long to get to its supporting cast only to drag them into this perpetual grind of skill ranks. There's no room to breathe or develop the world beyond how cool Felix is and the nefarious machinations of random groups on 'The Continent'. Every villain gets to deliver exposition to henchmen before Felix and the gang run in and interrupt. Do they come back again? Does it matter? Writing an entire indulgent opening chapter only for him to promptly forget his old life rubbed me to the wrong way, no continuity just framing. If you want to indulge in a blank slate MMO world, just start on the beach with System Initialization.

Monster Menu Review next thread. Really only 2 titles remain in this jaunt and then we're done. Isn't that grand? I won't bother posting my big list since it appeared last thread already. Dissonance goes above Elevation but below Coiling Dragon in the 'Dropped section. I heard it gets worse after the 50% mark but goddamn, I find that hard to believe.

Wait he was never named when I read it. Was that a thing that was dropped in the published version, then? Because his old name is never actually brought up at any point.

>> No.22285182

>>22285162
Mentioned by his sister once or twice in the opening two chapters, then never brought up again. I read the opening chapter on Royal Road and the Kindle version adds more context to the yacht party opening, which doesn't seem necessary given its dropped so quickly. A few of these Royal Road to Kindle books have re-written their openings, saw it in Beware of Chicken too.

12 Miles Below

https://www.amazon.com/12-Miles-Below-Progression-Fantasy-ebook/dp/B0BWKDF1C7

Icy death above. Monster-filled dungeons below. He must fight or freeze.

Extreme sub-zero temperatures suffocate the surface. Frozen structures of bygone eras span across massive ice-wastes. And the survivors closely guard any technology rediscovered within them.

The only escape from the deadly climate is beneath the surface, but that doesn't mean it's safe...

Monstrous machines lurk in the depths. Unhinged demigods war against them, dying over and over, treating it all like a game. The depths themselves shift over time, more contraption than rock.

When an expedition into the far uncharted north goes terribly wrong, Keith Winterscar and his father get trapped together in a desperate fight for survival. Stumbling upon an ancient war of titanic scale, the two will need to set their differences aside while they struggle against gods, legends, and the secrets of the realm that lies below.

If it's a finished trilogy and I liked it, then maybe I'll finish before moving on. Any longer than that and I'll probably read other stuff in between. The DRM can be relatively easily removed, especially if you bought it legally. In that case you just need Calibre and the RemoveDRM plug-in and import the book into the Calibre library and it'll do everything for you automatically as long as it's configured properly. I only really read and enjoy Tolkien, literally every day for about 2 years now, because ereader and History of Middle-earth, among his other work. I am fully committed to the first age now, I can't get enough of it. I want to study it and translate it and be a mega sperg about it. Before that, I just read The Red Book annually but that aspect of Tolkien is still close to my heart.
I don't care for most books, and finding recommendations online usually just consists of digging a lot beneath the Hype Train mainstream and creating lots of filters. I've only actually read a few of the popular ones like the thread picrelated you referenced. I read Neuromancer and I can personally groove on it because certain cyberpunkscifi really do it for me, but I understand anybody who doesn't. I like that, but not PKD for example.

Many years ago, I asked my IRC friends (half of whom were Tolkien nerds) for Tolkien-like recommendations, or at least anything kind of related, and I have a long to-read of 20 or so books. Out of them, a few years ago, I chose Shadow of the Torturer, and it grabbed me and held on because it was not generic, to my mind. I drop most books early on. It wasn't power fulfillment fantasy, it wasn't grimdark lame, it wasn't only dialogue trash, long periods of time are skipped over with a few sentences, it's not pretentious, the adventure doesn't stop or foreshadow or telegraph or treat you like an idiot. Gene Wolfe even inserts a bunch of tasty philosophical reflections which really make you think. There are elements of language, like Tolkien. There are many nuggets of cool-sounding story seeds which are never explained and passed over quickly, kind of like Tolkien. I initially was hooked because it is unpredictable and feels like a real adventure for me, which is one aspect of what hooked me into Tolkien in the first place.

I am not saying you will like it just because Tolkien, I am only saying there are elements I sought for years of failure, our quest for books that don't suck, which Gene Wolfe fulfilled for me. You might hate it, but at least look into it and read a few chapters past when he is exiled to get a taste. If you don't dig it by then, feel free to drop it. There's also more in a series if you want it. If not, you can safely drop it like a piece of hard scifi "neat!" photograph and still have enjoyed it.

You'll either love it or hate it. I ended up hating it after I finished the series. So much of what happens and most of the characters end up being completely superfluous. Shit happens just to happen. Granted; there's always SOMETHING happening, but a lot of it ends up ultimately not mattering at all. Everything could have been cut in half (and the author's terrible attempt at humor could have been removed completely) and it would have been MUCH better.

I recently finished rereading the third (out of five) PKD short story collection. My favorite, stand-out story of this block would have to be Misadjustment. I do have a bit of a hardon for well-done reveals/twists that are unknown to the reader but common/known to the main character.

Worm is okay once you realize that the author has nothing important to say and you can safely skim parts where anything you are remotely uninterested in is happening.

Walking home alone thinking about how her friend was mean to her? Just skim it. Thinking about how she has a crush on some guy? Just skim it. Wondering what her dad thinks of her? Just skim it. Nome of that shit is going to be relevant after the next plot event happens; it's all just filler to pump "chapters" of tumblr post tier content out. Wildbow is not exactly a fucking philosopher so any time one character is alone in the scene you really don't have to give a shit - you're not going to miss much.

And the parts where characters are actually interacting are genuinely pretty good storytelling, so it's a shame there's so much filler that people miss them.

Lord of the Isles by David Drake. I get the comparisons to Robert Jordan, after finishing this book. It lacked the great hook at the end of Eye of the World, however, that kept me going with Jordan. Had Jordan's book simply ended without that I doubt I'd have read the rest of the Wheel of Time. I have the next book in Drake's series already, I grabbed them both for very cheap from a Library sale, so I suppose I will give back in after I finish my other books currently in queue. Also, man is this cover shitty in a really kitschy way I find myself nostalgic for.

The Book That Wouldn't Burn by Mark Lawrence. I know this makes me uncool here, but I rather like Lawrence's books. This is yet another sci-fi dressed up in fantasy clothes books from him and from the first 10 pages I could tell it tied into his larger mythos just from a couple name drops.

There's two meanings to this. There's writing as prose, and writing as narrative. I think you're asking about narrative writing. For me, what makes a narrative bad is hackneyed plots and cliched characters. The more I feel like I've already read this story, seen these particular tropes and cliches unfold, the less I feel like I have to finish the book. I don't demand total originality, after all I'd hardly be a fan of genre fiction in general, and fantasy in particular, if I turned my nose up at cliches, but I expect some kind of effort to hook me into the story. Humor, titillation, mystery, drama, can be almost anything. I just have to have a reason to turn the page after I recognize where the story is going and can predict with reasonable accuracy how it will end. If it can do that, I don't bother, the book is closed and sold to a used book store.

Writing can fail on different levels from "objectively bad" to "subjectively bad."
>typos, incorrect formatting, etc
Objectively wrong. If it's clear there's an intent you can invent your own rules McCarthy style but even then you have to be consistent.
>characters speak and act in nonsensical ways, narrative prose is uninsightful and plodding
Subjectively incorrect, but still identifiable by most people as being "bad." You can pull out individual chunks of the writing and read them aloud and you'll sound like an idiot.
>nothing happens in the plot, characters don't learn anything interesting, issues are unresolved or resolved in unsatisfying ways
Storytelling issues are fully subjective, even the frameworks under which story structure should be discussed is a subjective issue. But when a story falls outside the realm of any of those established frameworks, it damns the writing more than the first two types of failure can. The more a story fails here, the harder it is to explain to people why it's bad - but the fact that it's hard to explain why it's bad is part of what makes it bad.

Shit like the black Velaryons in HotD, or the nonsensically diverse Two Rivers in the WoT tv show pisses me off, because I'm too autistic to blindly accept them. What you're objecting to is more about internal consistency than it is about racial representation. It's logically inconsistent for a remote region like the Two Rivers to be multi-ethnic, as they go several generations without any outsiders coming to visit, let alone joining their communities. Many centuries of such isolation would lead to homogeneity in physical traits.

This is something the Amazon show didn't bother to consider when they made Eamond's Field a multiracial hub. This tiny village at the ass end of nowhere, which has not even seen a tax collector from their distant monarch in living memory, is somehow still as racially diverse as a port city getting traffic from several continents. Makes no sense.

Also, when you use terms like "minority" and "diversity" it's hard for me to tell if you actually know what these words mean or if you're simply using them as buzzwords. Cause it seems like you're using "minority" to mean "black people" and "diversity" to mean "presence of black people". If that's what you mean, just say it plainly. I very much dislike the way these terms are used to obfuscate racial discourse, because they're perfectly serviceable and meaningful terms when used correctly, and in this particular case the correct meaning of "minority" (read: racial minority) is pertinent here, but I don't want to launch into a spiel about it if you're just using it in the modern parlance.

If you've ever wanted to see what chef Clive from Sunderland gets up to when he and his m8s get isekaied well here's your boy. Clive is a bleh bleh bleh whatever but the thing I like is that he sticks with it, through all 34 hours of audiobook (of volume 1!). He comes off as an ingrate douche, then the offer turns out to be a trojan horse. One by one, helpful friends show their own agenda. It's not sophisticated writing, but there's enough give and take in allegiance to keep things rolling.

The giant size, I don't know what to say. Author could have chopped it up and made more money. I'm moving on to v2, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who was genre naive. If you know what you can tolerate and can sense it in an hour or so why not. You don't want to commit to something of this size unless you know yourself.

>Thread Question:
Has western literature lost too much of its spiritual influence due to rise of American literature and utter spiritual collapse that followed? Can we overcome barbarism brought by Americans?

Culture has only been made by a few authors, a few physolophers, a few writers, a few scientists, a few artists, fashion designers, cookers, architects... Over 1000 years, a few thousand individuals.
It is because of the uniformization through education that the quality of these people has collapsed. A burger only hurts those who stop cooking home for themselves, It's the act of letting go individual responsabilies that gives way to the substitution by the American culture. This culture does not force anyone, everyone is free to accept it or to prefer the reading of Lautréamont, Goethe, Tolkien, Dante or Villier de l'Isle Adam.

The root cause is the vast nature of most humans which is evil, indolent and quick to submit to the strongest for security and food. Can we blame them? I have no answer. I would say, everyone shall do what he thinks he has to, may the better granted among the waste.

Title: Kitty Cat Kill Sat
Author: Argus

[Story]
Humanity's long technological journey had led to a Golden Age, creating wonder and miracles that beggar understanding. It's been many, many thousands of years since that time. The solar system is a mess, humanity and its off-shots - biological and artificial - dwell on moons, planets, space-ships or artificial habitats, unconnected and fearful. Some live on devastated Earth, populated by small or bigger communities with various level od advancement. The space is full of debris, rouge battle-station, malicious AIs and automated combat drones. Not a pleasant place.

Above Earth's sky the planet is orbited by the gigantic Station, one of the greatest creations of humanity, built, improved and controlled by many over the millennia. Its sole inhabitant, captain and self-named protector of humanity is Lily Ad-Alice - working tirelessly to thwart dimensional incursions, nuking authoritarian regimes with orbital anti-matter cannons, repairing her home and napping in the mean-time.

Lily's a cat, and the station wasn't made to be operated by paws. She's been at it for a few hundred years. She's definitely not having a good time.

[Review]
It's been some time since I've read a true Sci-Fi story, and now I think I should read more. There's something special to the themes and topics of the genre, different to typical Fantasy. Reflections on humanity and its history, philosophical questions, wondering over the future of our species...Most of that through negative lens, by and large. Fascinating none the less.

Kitty Cat Kill Sat is one of those stories focusing on the fate of humanity, through the eyes of a depressed, scatter-brained cat with a noble heart. The characterization might be one of the stronger parts of the story, inter-woven with a compelling history of the state of the world and Lily's place in it. There are more characters than the protagonist, but there are no other PoV than hers, so don't expect a varied story.

The story shows a lot of traits that makes reading webnovel frustrating - solid concept, decent writing and next-to-none real structure or solid plan. The story starts good, then hits a frustratingly meandering period between 30-60% of the story where almost no plot happens. Then then author finally decides what he wants to do with the story and it continues with more concrete goals. Still, it shows the plot was in part made up as it went, even though the author has the skill to make it a coherent whole at the end of it, even if barely. It could be a bit shorter, not as stretched.

My least liked part of the story was the previously mentioned meandering period in the middle, with repetitive events and scatter-brained monologues. Another annoying part were the theme of depressions and fighting it, which is so ubiquitous these days I just rolled my eyes. Might be a 'me' thing, though. None the less, it's much better written than 90% of webnovels, so there you go.

Adjacent to the review, I feel like reading another of the author's known stories - 'The Daily Grind'. It's about an IT worker that find an interdimensional liminal space in his office, leading to a dungeon with strange materials and beings. Supposedly it's quite good, but swithcing focus book to book, from progression fantasy to societal political drama concerned with topics of utopia and transhumanism...Well, I'll at least try the first book and give my impressions.

Anyone here read The Daily Grind? Any thoughts?

Honestly this is why I tend to dislike MMO LitRPGs, because they'll just sort of arbitrarily make the protagonist busted in a way that feels at-odds with how an actual game would be. Sometimes that can work, if it's like a new game and there's no real clear ideas of what's good or not, but MMO players fucking scour a game trying to optimise it, you will NOT find some dumb random broken shit.

the author is weirdly prescient on a lot of things for a book written in 1904, and i say this as someone who didn't think 1984 or fahrenheit 911 or brave new world were prescient in the slightest.
that said, the book is extremely meandering, i wouldn't mind the focus on religion if the author was a good advocate for catholicism, but he isn't, and according to my kindle i'm at 48% and the book has just now managed to get around to creating a semblance of plot and conflict.

that said, the concepts he tackles are truly interesting. he has a great creative mind. just an awful shame about his writing. if you can enjoy it, more power to you.

Nice. That's actually what I was hoping it would be and what initially intrigued me about the books. Basically I want to see that idea played out free of any modern day sensibilities as possible and with each character or faction viewpoint getting its own say in its motivations etc.

I'm thinking now I might get around to this one sooner rather than later, kinda in the mood for military stuff anyway.

Btw while we're talking Baen I feel I have to mention the obligatory Prince Roger/Empire of Man recommendation. It doesn't fit into the theme we're speaking on here exactly but its the best from that catalogue that I've tried.
