The goal of all organisms is to survive and reproduce. Resources (lands, foods, water, and females) are scarce while needs tend to be unlimited. So how could an ugly man win the competition (get a spouse and reproduce)? By migrating to the wider and more promising place with less competition where he could find a female that on the same level as he is (say it physically or mentally). This is what the biologist called as behavioral adaptation that relies on Intelligence, memories and ability to find patterns that descended from his parents.
