>Robot Wars by Pom
A breath of fresh air (although, as you will see below, I don't know why) at the end of this issue. I have to admit I could barely get started on many of the stories this issue without rolling my eyes. All our /lit/ authors have a real problem with tone and voice - does every story have to be a first-person bizzaro livestream? It's too "I'm writing in &amp" for my liking. But at least Robot Wars had a wild and messy kind of character that suits itself, I can't fully say why I make an exception here. Repeat use of the phrase "Anyway, sorry" was transparent and revealed Pom too fully behind the story trying instead of doing. But I really enjoyed it. The ending was fun and I loved the use of Holy shit. Felt great and emphatic. Negative reviews from last thread about Robot Wars I probably even agree with but I think it's an earnest effort with a lot of character that isn't just wholly perfomative. Nice one Pom.

I agree with this. Robot Wars was one of only a few comfy stories for me this issue. It has a properly fleshed out protagonist you can understand (even if they're a Zoomer), and the story is tragic and ends well. Tbh I think people just read the colloquial prose and are saying they don't like it because they don't think it's sophisticated, which is weird because it has more substance than a lot of the other stories.

I was not a fan of Powerpunk, which seemed to be stuck on the shadow of its own self imposed shtick, never getting anything deeper or being unselfconcious. But it was still okay. If you want to be cyical about it, probably 2-30%. Now, is this because this magazine is entirely propped up by the miserly self-interest of some aspiring /lit/ authors' guild? Or, perhaps, do a bunch of /lit/ people who half ass being a proper writer read a homegrown magazine, get inspired, and decide they want to try to throw their hat in that ring?
I'm betting it's the latter. In fact, it always has been. Every single person who read and patronized the quarterly also wanted to be in the quarterly.
I mean, isn't it ridiculous? The idea that for two years a cabal of roughly 100-150 users have kept these threads going all because they think it'll be some amazing career launchpad? There's an ad for some /lit/ book in every issue, I doubt they've driven 8 total sales.

It's a community project, this is what that looks like. You've never seen one like it, because why would one grow up around you? Are you an inspiring person?
I bet Kawata Shoujo threads were mostly people trying to get their writing/storylines in. Soils the whole project, doesn't it?

So you’re saying that there’s maybe 3 people on /lit/ who support &amp without writing for it? You do know that the vast majority of /lit/ is not made up of writers, right? This is a board based around the discussion of literature, not the shilling of one’s own self-described literature.

>> No.22252446

>>22252406
I don't really see &amp as much as a launch pad as much as I see the writers as my peers. After being around this site for so long I just like to read what anons want to write. Even the contemporary writers I enjoy don't hit me the way /lit/'s writers do. I want to share my writing too and see if there's some common ground.

>> No.22252454

>>22252440
Obviously meant 20%.
Lit is also overwhelmingly not interested in homegrown projects. If you ask the editor, you'll find out that many of the homegrown projects are quite incestuous. Editor mentions that the people behind the early &amp issues were also behind about 4-5 other /lit/ projects. Many of the dudes who wrote for &amp also wrote for the quarterly and also wrote for unreal, also wrote for /ffa/ and also did some annotations for Moby Dick and also wrote a story in This Is Burgerpunk.

It's a small board, and an even smaller slice of that board gives a damn about board projects. So, what's your point?

>> No.22252480

>>22252446
That's basically what it is. I don't think anyone has ever seen it as a launchpad or an oppurtunity to shill. The guy in question doesn't even understand that most of the &amp ads are just put in there for fun by the editor himself or the editor's friends. He has such a grossly cynical idea of the world. Like the concept of community just washes off of him, and everyone must be here to grift and has been patiently waiting for two and a half years for this thing to blow up and launch them into superstardom.

If you mean ads for books I don't know what to tell you, I doubt any of them handful of guys who have had their stuff advertised expect anything to come &amp ads. You would literally be better off buying a 4chan banner ad. So if any of them are engaging in these threads for the pure motivation of having their books shilled then they are wasting A LOT of time... it is the most retarded scheme I could imagine, which says more about your assumption that it's true.

I didn’t say it was their responsibility. These are mistakes that lead to multiple sentences requiring double or triple takes. It’s not something you just read past. And it’s not something that the average &amp reader isn’t going to mention in a review, or even outside of one for that matter.
This is /lit/, you can’t misuse a comma without someone correcting you.

I am a reader. I'm not an &amp editor. Just an editor editor. I also notice typos and point them out in my reviews. Most don't feel the need to. Also, Adem sold a decent amount of copies, obviously not a bestseller, but he's also been running ads for months and has been interviewed and reviewed in every 4chan related pub.
>>22252546
I don't think he's making a point at all, really. And multiple people have already responded pretty succintly to his "point". It's just sort of stupid.
Not sure if it's the same guy, but it would make sense that it is consider this exact same conversation happens once a thread, usually during the lulls.
>>22252543
I don't know what he means by shill, but what I meant is that people using the mag as an advertising platform, which is just a patently absurd idea. Like I said, he's just an outsider throwing feces. I put an ad in &amp in 2021 becuase a fried was guest editing. There was no money incentive. I really liked the aesthetic and the vibes around the magazine. It's a sick ad BTW

Also what he's really saying here is that he too doesn't read the mag, he just hangs out in threads and posts flamebait. Which is why he never mentioned the mortal sin of double posting in Adem's story until I pointed it out an entire month later. Funny. If he doesn't read the magazine and wants to see it fail and thinks it's populated by leeches, why is he in every single thread?

Yes. the ads in &amp are just fun things that make it feel like a magazine. We are all just LARPing having fun.

Yup
I mean look at &amp. Editor pays for a website that pretty well designed, goes all out on the exterior and interior design of the magazine. And yet the only way to actually read the thing is to click 3 times and download a fre pdf, or click 8 times and vuy a 20 dollar print off of a website that hasn't been updated since 2006.
It's clear what the aim of this magazine is, and it isn't to shill anything. It's a labor of love from some /lit/ autists and a love letter to whatever fledgling writer stumbles upon the threads and is inspired to create.
All in all, a purehearted project. Baffling that it would attract a dedicated detractor, but it's 4chan, and it's (probably) just one guy

I'm amazed to hear any praise for Survive desu. This issue is kinda mid but that was the absolute low point. All the prose was just uncomfortably forced, especially at the beginning, and it's so painfully unclear what's happening the whole way through, with basically no character development to top it off. Nothing memorable. A professional editor would absolutely rip it to shreds.

That story, along with half the others in the mag (this issue and most others), just felt like watching someone do shitty kickflips on a skateboard - mildly flashy, but going absolutely nowhere. That fact that a piece like that is getting praise is really revealing about the &amp readership desu.

Also I felt the prose was clear and the concept obvious, in fact, it was too clear what was happening a third of the way in and you were constantly made to wait for the subversion of the punchline only to neither receive the punchline or the twist, but a total glossing over, I guess because the punchline was so apparent.
Anyhow, I placed it right at the middle of the stories in the magazine, where it belongs.

The top of a flagpole on a windy rainy day, discussing slavonics with a beautiful russian girl, homeless dipsomaniacs in british park, chased by feral night dogs over the fence bump into the same 2 girls from the concert (Pelican and Crab) What a coincidence did you know I try to tell them, (Intense rains begin) Did you know (static and mutts barking) I can't hear you I have to tell you did you notice..(They're turning away it's an odd park some other time thanks for the keys) I had met you twice earlier (they're gone). Now she's whispering slavonics to me, she's got this fire because she knows I'll turn on her when mouthing english and she's taking her chance, I just look at her nose, her tan, her eyes like Equitorial caramel, and then it's Gone. It was a nice dream, these are the things worth living for. Maybe we'll meet again. Anyway nice issue, Keep up the good work.

&amp seems to have reached a steady state, with a larger team now working along the original editor on a regular basis. Editor-sama might be going to jail for a couple months, don't know the latest on that, but the recent issues of the magazine clearly demonstrate that the project is able proceed even with his absence or reduced involvement. There was also some retarded drama involving Unreal Press and doxxing that I wasn't present for and haven't been able to piece together the details of because I don't care enough to.
&amp continues to be the premier publication for finding literary excellence, half-baked effluence, and cutting-edge incomprehensibility all in one convenient package. Long live &amp. Submit to &amp. New issue at the beginning of next month.

No Adonis is an 8/10 and Mixtape is a 7/10, though I'm basing that off of having read the book, not your excerpt. Nothing in 17 even scratches a 5/10, with most of it hovering around a 3.
It's a little worrying that we're already being warned that 18 is going to be comparatively "thin" when 17 is something I thought was your standard of thin, what with half of the names being from people I recognize as having worked with the mag.

>> No.22279556

Thin can either mean not enough content to complete it or that it's lacking in quality. I'm assuming he meant the former, I guess you think he meant the latter?

The former is the latter. Quality comes from having a slush pile to pull from. Most writing that gets submitted to these meme mags are worse than the American Psycho blog post we got in 16.
A tight schedule + low submissions = lacking in quality.

This is the way things are and always will be for &amp. It would be trivial for editor anon to cast a wider net than 4chan’s literature board and fill up a monthly magazine with 5/10 content. Forget the quarterly, minimag does weekly releases and his content is 90% twitter users of not more
But, in a completely thankless effort to remain true to this shitty board, he only calls for submissions from 4chan
And, assuming you’ve been here for a while, getting 2 7s in a single issue, given the caliber of writers on this board, and given that the good
ones are donating their work to a magazine that will do nothing for their career due to the aforementioned self imposed limitations, is a total rarity.

Most they can do is run a call for submissions as an ad instead of what they’ve currently got up.

But all you cocksuckers want to do is bitch. As if you’re paying. As if you didn’t sign up for this ride two years ago. Amp is as good as the writers on this board. If it sucks, it’s on them.

What an absurd thing to even say. “I can’t believe issue a month away is thin. How could they do this to me? I deserve better.”
You should honestly kill yourself, and honestly you should kiss my fucking feet for saving this issue (by week’s end)
Fucking ingrate. What did you write? Who put you on the planet? Just a fucking voyeur. The nigga in the cuck chair should shut the fuck up while the big dick bull is fucking his monthly magazine’s tight wet pussy.
Miserable like whiners that plague this board. Not a nickel of talent in your whole lineage.

Type this out again, this time without crying like a bitch. No one gives a fuck how much blood, sweat and tears you're pouring into your little discord project. No one is here for you. It's the contributors that make or break each issue. They carry you, not the other way around.
This is the second month in a row you've failed to attract anyone worth reading and and the only thing you have is a fucking bitchtier crybaby post about how everyone expects too much from you?
>Amp is as good as the writers on this board. If it sucks, it’s on them.

You don’t, lol. You know the number man, and it keeps you up at night(afternoon, whenever you sleep). Try as you might, you just can’t seem to make an impact on this world. Nah, he isn't.
I have never seen a complainer in these threads that wasn't the biggest faggot alive.
If you look at the threads for other /lit/ projects, the criticism has a much more tolerable tone because they're critiquing the product as a consumer.
This guy, or these people, if it's two, commit to this pathetic concern troll bit. They do not deserve respect. It's literally hebrew behavior to deliver pointed criticism in this tone.
And honestly, why is this dude allowed to be a dick but if anyone calls him a faggot they're hurting the nebulous &amp brand? It's all bad faith shit, and it's fucking obvious. Guy deserves to get trolled every thread, but the dumbasses here always engage sincerely

Hopefully this is how he's engaged with from now on, but here i am, effortposting.

Not a single thing he said was incorrect and he was far more civil than you are right now. It isn't fair to blame the quality of submissions on us. We shouldn't have to plop out a slab of solid gold every time you guys are hurting for submissions, especially when we only learn of this a few days before submissions effectively close.
It is completely fair to criticize you for the quality of authors that you attract. Why would I want to write for you after this, an interaction so unhinged that your boss needs to come in and reprimand you?
