There's a couple reasons why: reading is considered by women to be a status symbol to lord over other women. If you're a woman who reads, and reads a lot, you're better than the women who don't.

Another reason is that women, like men, also have shit taste when it comes to the stuff they mindlessly consoom. Men will read isekai manga while girls will jill to yaoi or trashy romance manga. Now imagine that but American and there you go.

The other problem is that literature/philosophy/smart books is typically seen as a thing "for men". Women avoid these books because they're afraid that not only will enjoying these books result in them being ostracized by their female peers for being "smarter" or trying to attract men, but these books aren't popular/relevant among women's present day-to-day interests. That's why women go NUTS for stories about school, romance and sex, and social values/moralism, and to an extent body horror/puberty, and drama. It's not because these books are "too hard", that's a lie. It's because they simply don't appeal to women's interests.

This is only because the rules that restrict women offer them protection from the violence of men in exchange for servitude. They "benefit" from and uphold the rules because the alternative to it is to be an outcast. But the benefits are not that good, for many they've realized they give up their freedom in exchange for a piece of the pie of a man, and they would rather have their own.
The reason rape is such a common kink is because women do not feel like they are free to express their sexual desires without being seen as slutty or sinful. Being raped in fantasy gives them the moral neutrality to be able to enjoy sex, since they are not willing participants they cant be blamed for it.
