Is there any point to watching a play instead of reading it?

do both, retard

yes
the production of a play involves a lot more than the script. there are decisions to make about staging, props, costumes, casting, directing, etc., therefore making productions a phenomenon in-and-of-itself. you may get a new sense of the meaning of the play because there are more things to sense.

Plays are meant to be recited aloud. You miss a lot from Shakespeare if you internalise the dialogue.
In fact, reading Shakespeare aloud was a popular social activity up until the 20th century.

A man is a boy perfected, a father is a man perfected. A play, and here I must go on to designate it as a script for a play to deny giving the written text alone anything more than parochial importance, is the perfection of all its elements. An actor is perfected when he is able to inhabit a great role, the role is perfected when a great actor is able to bring it to life; every line of the script can be lovingly extended to its ultimate purpose in the fulfillment of a great production, and to not witness it is to deny yourself the totality of what you claim to have read.

you can't read a play, you can only read its script. to do that and only that, you trample over the will of whoever it was that originally wrote it. their original vision is not fully contained within these pages, rather it only becomes fully realised on stage.
