Are there any contemporary medieval fantastic writers that come close to the depth of sub-creation that does Tolkien? Need something true to medieval mythology whilst at the same time fresh. Does such a thing exist?

Tolkien set the standard too high and used every influence imaginable.

Most fantasy books are usually the same. The best option is look to /v/ with WoW or Elder Scrolls, maybe even /mu/.

Do the in-game books from Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim count as literature?

>> No.2223717

why don't you just read the source material and be done with it

>do books count as literature?

Yes they do. Don't worry, you can still tell people you're a book geek because you read The Lusty Argonian Maid.

You guys have basically read my mind. After I started this thread I downloaded The Elder Scrolls library in .mobi format.
>>2222478
Sorry. I should have put a comma there.

By fresh, I meant not Tolkien I guess.
Also, /mu/ was a good suggestion. There are a lot of melodic death metal bands that praise Odin in all of His glory etc.

I'll probably also get into George R.R. Martin soon, too.

I'll just professionally disregard the discrepancies of your post and suggest:

The Earthsea series, by Ursula K LeGuin.
Pleasantly different from Tolkien's works, quite original for it's time and well written.

The Dune series, by Frank Herbert.
Equally substantial as Tolkien's world and fantastical and unscientifically enough to be considered Science-Fantasy.

I have, completed an honour's course in Medieval lit in June of this year.

>> No.2223744

Oh and The Once and Future King, by White.

You could also try Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, by Tolkien and The Name of the Rose, by Umberto Eco.

Maybe "Elric of Melniboné" and "Fahfrd and the Grey Mouser" as well.

so why don't you jsut be done with it

>play fantasy rpg videogame
>enter library
>read for hours
Cause that's what you play games for.

You could read Planescape: Torment
It's a pretty cool "game".
