Henry Miller is my favorite writer so of course I like it. Its reputation isn’t really deserved. The smutty scenes are mostly played for laughs. Miller was still coming into his own then and his message is one of “blooming”. Cancer isn’t really a bleak book in my opinion, but that may be because I know it as the stage setter for later Miller where he is sage like and very spiritual. Cancer has some of those remnants of later Miller but it sets the tone with his disgust with the world and society. All in all it’s a hilarious and well written book. Miller can be uneven at times but when he is on he is among the best

This is one of the strangest criticisms I see passed on this board. Basically every book worth its salt has been posted here before. The expanded litcore is huge and 99% of those books have acclaim or following elsewhere, as litcore is basically the major and minor classics. I’m leaning towards this post being bait. Hey, that book by Starkie is really entertaining. If you haven't already, you should read it alongside Rimbaud. How's that ND Baudelaire? I flipped through it at my local big bookstore and thought it was interesting having a selection of various translators collected in a sequence, it makes you curious to search out other interpretations. The only thing I didn't like is the fact it's not a parallel text, the originals are in the back as an appendix/endnotes. Which is great, that they at least include the original texts, but it was so much fun, back when I was learning French, to have the same words facing each other in different languages.

The Starkie definitely enhanced my appreciation of Rimbaud, especially knowing his interest in alchemy and life. I found Rimbaud to be gibberish at first but I really wanted to get him so I’m glad I found the Starkie. He is one of the great enigmatic figures of literature.

I like the Baudelaire with the various translators. They are poets in their own right and they add a flair that professional translators lack. As I’ve gotten older I’ve gotten more lax in caring about translations. If one doesn’t mesh with me but I think there’s something there, I can always buy a different translation. Anons are too autistic and cult like over them, especially the Russians

I wish Penguin still made their (poet) In Translation series where you get an assortment of different ones. I think they still have their Petrarch in print

That's actually how I felt about teaching: I really liked that some of my teachers communicated that feeling of passion and curiosity for reading back when I was younger, but I dreaded having to teach, instill, pound Fitzgerald or Baudelaire or Rulfo into someone else. Imagine some kid hating Dostoevsky's guts because their high school teacher made them read Notes from the Underground. School is where art goes to die: everything about it is designed to pin down, cut up, dissect the living word.

It would be ideal if students could choose whatever book they wanted to read. That would require a teacher with a vast amount of knowledge on a vast amount of books. Such a teacher would need to get paid a lot and be given a top notch education, and endless free time to constantly be reading and understanding new material. So many readers seem to have to have been turned off during their education, only to have that passion reignited, or ignited, once they were out of school. Unfortunately, I don’t think there is a solution

I seem to have had teachers who were so inept at translating their enthusiasm for reading that I felt I needed to branch out into my own path. I remember debating about sci-fi b-movies with my sophomore english teacher; talking about Joyce, Lucia, and Beckett with my junior-year teacher; and rereading Dante in italian and french with my senior-year teacher. You need a guiding hand, but sometimes people rule themselves out immediately: I have several colleagues who've told me they can't stand sitting still for long periods of time, and who want to get into reading. People who can't sit still in an empty room, alone, void of all distraction, should not be reading. Give me an empty room, a chair, and circulating air, and I could stay put forever.

Often professors don't even read anything outside of their area of specialization, so they go inside a classroom knowing nothing about the many facets of Art at all.

Besides, your average teacher will just regurgitate whatever political accepted garbage is being currently shoved into their guts. Because decades old politics are no longer topical or divisive, instead they're often just entirely mainstream views now, making it harder and harder to find really cool stuff out there.

Further, classical literature is still viewed as too 'esoteric' and 'ancient' by the educational corporations. They want students as dullards as they can, just endless making and remaking more and more past paper examinations. (e.g: the way you are accepted into medical school is not by picking a theoretical science book, but by redoing 5000 questions of the entrance exam) Just look at examinations like the Gaokao in China - totally dystopian.

While you could argue that it is no outright preaching of the cultural degeneracy being done inside some schools, the brainwash to
"mitigate your prejudices at any cost" and become functional illiterate cunts "accepting every cultural degeneracy"(political otherwise) certainly happens over time to kids and teenagers by moronic teachers and professors. Some of these kids and teenagers, if they have good heads either way, are in for a wild enraged awakening when they touch classical literature for the first time outside of the school system.

They don't care about teaching real art and beauty to children. They don't care about classical literature.

I’m not as keen on Black Spring as some. The influence of Rimbaud is strong and I’m not a huge fan of when Miller dives into surrealism. Don’t let this turn you off on checking it out as everyone has different tastes. I’ve always thought Miller is at his best when he is fired up and yanking you along to inspire you, or when he is spiritual and zen-like, or when he is telling amusing anecdotes, or when he is talking about books or writers he likes. Miller wrote a lot and is a bit of a rambler so he can be all over the place, but when he hits, he hits good

Pessoa had a way of communicating the most abstract personal feelings and desires into word. With every passage I feel I understand exactly what beauty he is conveying, though I can’t fathom how he did so so effectively. Thats the best way to explain it. I really cannot praise it enough. Tagore’s Gitanjali is second in poetry for me, I would also recommend that as far as choosing something you can just read here and there.

So you're completely unaware how hated Thatcher was during her reign? Why do you think people were partying on the streets when Thatcher died? Do you know or understand nothing about UK politics?
Thatcher also wanted to completely gut the social safety net, had to be talked down from putting aids sufferers in concentration camps, wanted police to open fire on striking workers, and there were record numbers of strikes under her watch, wanted to reintroduce workhouses, privatized public utilities, fucking up systems that had long been regarded as the best in the world to that point and, oh yeah, was best friends with Jimmy Savile.

She wasn't incompetent. Quite the opposite. She was fucking dangerous and, along with Regan, set the tone for the next 40 years of misery and suffering.

No instead people rec no longer human (shit book btw of a fag complaining the whole time), gravities rainbow (shit book btw) catcher in the rye (are we in middle school?) moby dick (are we in high school?)

Anyways my point is you’re shallow fags with the understanding of high schoolers or lower, but even worse is you can only find recs from other shallow high schoolers and middle schoolers.
You’re a retarded fag in short.

Double faggots. If you post a book with a prisitine spine you’re an absolute faggot who only buys books as background decorations.

As a library-dependant poorfag, this thread saddens me deeply. I wish I could keep a copy of every book I've read.

The real fags are the ones patrolling other people's collection like some damn purity police, "Sir, you haven't damaged your books enough, you lose internet points!". Embarrassing. You could just strike up a conversation about an anon's book collection, isn't that the point of these threads anyway?

I've lost interest in the sad, bleak, and deteriorating island now populated, in the south anyway, by a cadre of immensely wealthy globalists and their army of acid attacking pakis who are used to keep the kifeless natives in check.

If only Scotland could escape that fate.

I was that professor who read everything and I gave students a list of optional readings. Many of us do that.
I trained as a generalists and did two separate PhD programs, switching from one after a master's to an elite one before working in several foreign universities and adjuncting till I finished. I just read, wrote, and did research for about 14 years. I never taught on my specialization.

The damage is done in high school. Students read for answers to multiple choice tests, they can't read for themes, patterns or similarities. They grow frustrated because they are scammed into expensive colleges deeply unprepared for reading and writing. The successful teachers give the students easy tests and continue to have lower expectations like those of high school teachers.

2034 offers some nice additional worldbuilding. Haven't got around to 2035 just yet, but that one differs greatly from the games unlike the former two (rather the games differ greatly lol).
