Post novels you consider underrated. I think this is one of Dostoevsky's best but I rarely hear anyone talk about it.

I read and enjoyed in but best one? The fact that it's auto-biographical makes it too unfocused on the themes and light on deep characterisation

I like the fish out of water experience it provides, seeing this simpy author try to coexist with a bunch of violent, drunken thieves and murderers.

Yes, this one is very good.
Not really novels, but I like Aldous Huxley's Grey Eminence. It's the biography of a French diplomat who helped insert France into the Thirty Years' War.
I also enjoyed Chekhov's Sakhalin Island.
Calvino's essays about classic literature are fantastic, too.

It's his best but even (exceedingly rare) Hawkes fans don't read it. Sad!

How? If youre going with Goncharov I would choose The Precipice which is extremely underrated

I don't know if this is a hot take, but I think that The Unbearable LIghtness of Being is pretty underrated as far as novels go.
