SETTING
Earth, post-apocalyptic. Humanity lives in 4 large quadrants called 'seige capitals' - Asia, Antarctica, Australia, India. Europe was lost to nuclear war, Americas lost to monster invasion.

POWER SYSTEM
Some humans go into a Dream, if they die in the Dream they turn into a monster. If they survive the Dream they get special unique powers called Aspects and also a Flaw. Also Gates spawn randomly in the real world that let out monsters. People power up by killing monsters and obsorbing the Shards left behind. Also by killing monsters, Dreamers can acquire 'Memories' or 'Echoes'
Memories are objects like Weapons, Armor, Charms. Echoes are like a monster summons that listens to you. Stored in the soul, they can be both summoned in the real world or in Dreams. If damaged too much they get destroyed.

STORY
MC gets a really strong Aspect but his Flaw is that he cant lie. He has to fight and survive along with others in an abnormally difficult Nightmare.
I have been enjoying it, and new chapter every day

I'm looking for an audiobook/podcast, heard years ago.
Hint : it's neither Diaspora (Egan) or Children of Mankind (Tchaikovsky).

The epic story was by far the best one I've seen. But I can't remember the name.

Setting :
Mankind is destroyed by a sudden attack from an alien species from outer space. Earth is ravaged, every life is lost.
But Mankind's legacy prevailed... in the form of an AI. It becomes sentient and emerges to see its beloved mankind have been eradicated.

The AI then spends years absorbing mankind's knowledge.
Then it builds itself a gigantic core, an huge mothership that take off from Earth.
After using the solar system as an open mine for ressources, the AI ship and goes on an epic quest to seek revenge.

The ship and its drone swarms is constantly evolving to win its battles against the Alien destroyers, who find themselves in the brink of utter destruction from the rampaging sentient AI.
But at the same time is trying to rebuild a civilization in the image of the defunct humans.

Production :
It was stored on a free SF site with many audio fictions.
A least 5 episodes.
The cast : at least two narrators (one male, one female), really good at their job to transform the really good script in an immersive story.
Awesome and chilling ambient sounds and music.

Underated masterpiece, I'd really like to listen to it again : did you heard of it ?

Many people who read webnovels have been burned by progressive sjw nonsense in traditional publishing and just want protagonist not to be shitty white knight who is ready to sacrifice himself for roasties dog at first available opportunity, they want hero or antihero who looks after his own interests first and when shitty authors instead write litrpg systems, harem shit, endless chapters of meaningless stats, and just shitty tropes from anime/manga/video games instead of putting genuine effort into creating a realistic non lame character then readers get upset.

Regarding ideals it is a stupid western brainwashing, it's fine to have ideals but what is shown in western movies and western books is main character always taken for a fool by everyone. It's fine to have ideals but kill enemies then get on with ideals.

Because they're active instead of passive, that's it.
Passive characters are a plague on writing and render any plot/setting/etc... meaningless.
Why are there no active moral protagonists? A combination of slave morality and cynicism makes the average person think that either asserting your beliefs is inherently evil or there's no point in doing anything so you should just live a quiet meaningless life and die for nothing.
It's either that or the main character has to personally kill Super Hitler, who is just whatever internet celebrity is popular to hate on when the story was being written.

By contrast antihero/villain protagonists can have petty ambitions that are actually possible to accomplish and the means and lack of morality to accomplish them. The writer is freed from the chains of "but what if what the MC does is BADWRONG or slightly inconveniences someone?" and lets them just write an interesting character who does things.

Of course this is shit too, maybe even worse in the case where the edgy villain protagonist created to free the author from association paradoxically becomes an author self insert and lives out a retarded wish fulfilment fantasy where he's a badass hero, now without even actually having to do anything that helps anyone at all, he's just "heroic" now when he beats random people up for no reason.

In general it's an obsession with "doing something" that causes all of this. Everything has to be good and evil fate of the nation, etc... Can't just be a fun adventure that's just interesting and has no real grand overarching plot.

I have never seen this problem occurring, you seem to just kind of make things up. Reactive isn't necessary passive. Seems more likely, since they're both conformists AND cynical nihilists. Probably they just conform because of the nihilism, they see no reason to to just take the easiest path through life.

>>22199525
I mentioned those too, "reactive" characters fall into the "kill mega hitler to save the world from the demon invasion"
It always feels like they're only acting because they HAVE TO, like they're being forced against their will by reality and would rather not. It's more conformism, entirely passive in nature. Let's look at an example of an active character: Conan. Now he's after revenge yes, but that only winds up happening due to a series of coincidences and really he just wanted to be free and answer the riddle of steel. He had no actual NEED to kill Thulsa Doom, he just wanted to and went out of his way to do it. And after he did, he continued on as before following his own goals. No one compelled or forced him to do anything aside from when he was a literal slave.

Blood Crest is amazing too, but it hasn't updated in like six months so I think it's probably abandoned.
Great characters and world building, lots of interesting divination/necromancy/vampire shit, only issue is the plot seems extremely ephemeral and meandering. Aside from "Voldemort's gonna kill you Harry" there's really not much else going on beyond the moment to moment. Probably why it got abandoned, no well established end goal for the story.

The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook, Dungeon Crawler Carl #3 - Matt Dinniman (2021)

For most of the book I thought that I would have to rate it lower. The setting is basically many metro stations with a complex arrangement of crisscrossing train lines of two primary types. It's meant to a be a puzzle. The preface notes that the reader doesn't have to understand what's going on. A lot was done with the setting later on that made me laugh and chuckle at the outrageous developments, so although I didn't like it at first it ended well.

The previously mentioned stuff that would be available on the fourth floor didn't disappoint. The personal spaces reminded me of the base building in Fallout 4. The sponsorships added a bit to the intrigue, of which there was more than I expected. The background space opera continued on. Various other foreshadowed events occurred. I assume that stating how the future floors will be is in-book marketing hype, which probably does well enough, but it also may be a bit overdone.

I still don't like Mongo. Katia was a lot better by the end. Many other characters played more of a role, mostly through the chat function, which showed that a greater community was beginning to form. I await seeing how that progresses. My primary concern is that each book is longer than the previous which may mean that I'll feel like there's a lot of filler and have to lower my rating. Hopefully even if there is, it'll be sufficiently enjoyable.

Rating: 4.5/5

>Why shouldn't heroes kill their enemies?
The platonic ideal of justice is "everything in its right place." Heroes save, not kill. There are some situations where killing can save many but for the most part the point is that punishment is up to the governing body. If the punishment isn't adequate, it's a failure of the system not the hero.
Batman stops criminals but it's up to the justice system to punish them. Why ask batman to kill when the justice system should be doing that?
If you want an extreme point of view, watch Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works.

Batman is literally a vigilante criminal breaking the law on the streets because the government can't stop crime using legal methods. At least use an example that makes sense like Spiderman, he just avoids killing people because he doesn't want to and it would make people hate him even more.

Back in the good old days all people had to do when not outside was read and write. The radio was the first blow to literature and caused a noticeable decrease in the quality of it. The television murdered it so badly it hasn't been the same since. The reason we lack authors comparable to the past greats is not because our brains have somehow degraded, its because there's simply many more things other than literature which can take up our attention now. That, and many of the people that in the past might have been great writers went to other, bigger things like making movies. (Though even these have degraded nowadays)

I just want a book with the protagonist doing stuff to better himself and his people, and not throw his life away for some stacey (the girls are usually very attractive in these stories).

Nothing at all wrong with that first cover. I was actually interested in the series until I read its wikipedia page:
>The book follows two main characters and a handful of minor ones. Gwendolyn Lancaster is the heiress to her family's vast fortune and political power; the Lancasters being one of the few families capable of growing the crystals needed to power airships and weapons. Bridget Tagwynn is also the heiress to her family, but the Tagwynn family—once renowned thanks to a brilliant Admiral ancestor—is now reduced to running a meat vattery; little better than common folk.
Fuck female protagonists.
The cover has a pirate on an airship. Commentary says steampunk Hornblower with fantasy warfare. I'm reaching for my wallet. The twist: the two main characters are heiresses. Sorry. You were so close. It's too late now. Boilerplate SJW attacks on my stubborn sexism will have no effect and will not change my mind.

There's nothing wrong with the first cover. It's included to show how bad they fucked up with the sequel on the right. Gwen's a cute and the other "heiress" is broke and an outcast. The other main character is the chad privateer captain on the first cover. The airship combat scenes are really well done and enough to keep you reading past the teens being dumb kids in their chapters.

negatives:
>glacial pace of ~1 chapter a week
>author is a woman (what I mean by this is that there seems to be a lot of effort spent on extra chapters for patrons, even non-canonical chapters, renditions of in-universe items like grimoires, character cards etc that would be better spent on writing etc.)

Brando Sando basically. People don't like it, I don't like it either, but when you say "hard fantasy" he's the first thing to come to mind. All the magic in his books follows specific hard rules and utilized scientific analysis to uncover and utilize those rules to the point where it's basically not even fantasy anymore and is just alternate reality physics.

Alternatively you may be interested in metaphysics/cosmology, in which case the only things I know of are real religious texts and adjacent mythology. They're written very differently to most books though and use a tremendous amount of analogy, metaphor, symbology, etc... And basically never bother with direct explanations since it's assumed you would either already know it or have been confused by the direct explanation and want something different. Read the Bhagavad Gita, it's really short and simple and will give you the tools to understand most other religious philosphy/mythology.

As a middle ground maybe try reading the Mahabharata or Journey to the West.

Talk about "passive-aggressive"! Making such an argument is obviously unnecessary, since the point is apperantly so self-evident that I only needed to vaguely allude to it foe you to understand.

But to be fair to Tolkien, D&D has been far worse for the genre than his shadow has.

"Know this GANAD!!! Your powers are drawn upon the countless souls you have brought down to agony and suffering, of all the sentient beings that have existed upon this great universe, you have broken all sanctity of life for the sake of your endless expansion. You dare relish on the blood of the endless transient suffering of the helpless, innocent, and the fallen souls of those who dare shed love on this endless darkness of time.

But MARK MY WORDS! The day of the catharsis WILL COME! The cries of the innocent, the shattered hearts of the brave, the very energy you feed upon WILL BE YOUR OWN DOWNFALL!!

Trace all the heart strings that has emerged across this chaos of time, the force that tugs us to action, to motion, and to will! YOU SHALL SEE THAT IT ALL CONVERGES TO MONAD!!! THE REQUIEM OF SOULS, THE CONVICTIONS OF THE BELIEVERS!! THIS VERY ENERGY DISPELS THIS DOMAIN OF DEATH YOU CAST ON ME."

The shattered body of the God machine started to reassemble it's self drawing resources across the riff of space-time,

It's fist starts to form an event-horizon, and upon the halo he casts on his head his holy rage converges onto GANAD...

And upon his cosmic forged fists accumulates the kinetic energy equivalent of the vast distance between him and GANAD.

In a swift motion, he throws his fist across the fabric of space-time, the event horizon around his fist morphing, folding the distance between him and GANAD, The warped fist of the GOD MACHINE BREAKS THROUGH THE BARRIER OF LIGHT!!! THE KINETIC IMPACT OF THE 500 MILLION YEARS WORTH OF DISTANCE CROSSED IN MERE SINGLE PLANK TIME, LANDING THE TITAN KNUCKLES RIGHT ONTO GANAD'S FACE.

The energy of the impact, equivalent of a million thermonuclear explosion, blasts the domain of death into an unholy chaos!!! THE REALM OF MONAD, THE DOMAIN OF LIFE... STANDS!!!

- Climax of Monad vs GANAD for the custodian of singularity event.

No, there is no argument there. What I recognized in your allusion is not any argument, just assumed truth. It's easy to recognize because the meme is so pervasive. And none of you pea-brains are EVER able to articulate a coherent argument as to why Tolkien should be blamed for problems in the genre. You can't even explain what the problems are in clear terms, let alone speculate about what an alternative timeline might look like.
>But to be fair to Tolkien, D&D has been far worse for the genre than his shadow has.
D&D is really just a massive grab-bag of fantasy ideas from numerous sources (including Vance, Lovecraft, CAS and Robert E Howard), and authors always just pick and choose what they want to use. D&D even popularized the term "Vancian magic."

LitRPG is video game mechanics. With stats (strength, stamina, ect...), classes, skills, evolution trees, ect...

A system can be thought of as some kind of AI assistant which can help the MC either directly with advice, issue quests to earn points or some kind of item store where they can spend these points or display the user's stats. Depending on the novel it can either have all of those or just some.

There is overlap but it doesn't have to. Usually in LitRPG everyone has stats and the world works under video game rules while systems are exclusive "cheats" for the MC.

As the guy who posted the picture, I agree with all your criticism. The character is supposed to be very physical and athletic with an assertive personality. A masculine jawline fits her character. That's just the nature of popularity.
Instead of crying about it, you could just try and work it into conversations.

Though personally for me it's depressing to hear about yet another huge, unfinished series. I know it's possible to derive entertainment from unfinished work and it's certainly possible to have an open-ended sequence of novels that don't really need to be "finished," but god damn. It's cool when authors are ambitious but maybe it would be better to aim for a 5-book, 1.5 million word epic to be finished in 10 years instead of 2-3 million words across 7-10 books.

you oversimplified the story fat too much there.

there is something consuming worlds . what it is not clear ,but it is so powerful even the gods died at it's hands .
it mutilates worlds ,make them into nightmarish ,horror infested landscapes .
it reaches earth.
those who survives the nightmares and gain aspects have to constantly enter the dream realm when they sleep to fight nightmares so they don't overrun the earth.

the dream realm is some kind of lovercraftian darl soulish world populated by a wide range of things from flesh eating monsters to things that make you insane when you look at them and everything is extra hard to kill

the protag ,sunless.his flaw is that he can't lie ,but what make his flaw deadly is his aspect . shadow slave . it means he's the shadow of the shadow god ,and his aspect demand he give his real name 'lost from light' to someone he deems worthy to become his master since ' a shadow should not walk without an owner'

all of this is brought to head with his foil. a girl named nephis ,who is basically his opposite but also somewhat neurotic and instable .
