I've read what I'm going to become. I now need a book to stop that happening.

Lolita.

Notes is top tier although i read it after the fact in case of myself. I'd suggest the rest of Dostoyevsky (Demons, Karamazov).

Concerning a book that will help you stop being like the narrator of notes. No book will help you with that. It's called self examination and making changes. You've done the first part.

Just use it as an example of not what to do. And if you see people like the narrator be nice to them.

What's so bad about that, op?

Being a miserable, witty loner? I suppose it has its perks.

Everyone always thinks they're the underground man when they read C&P.
Notice how he's a gigantic jackass, OP.
Don't be like him. Be like Holden.

I identified pretty heavily with the underground man until he started pushing himself on his one "friend" and that other group. Pacing around back and forth instead of just leaving or punching a motherfucker? Nah, even I'm not that beta.

Yeah, I mean, we all have our existential funks now and then, but dat fuckin shindig?
What a joke. And that's sort of the point, but still.

winesburg, ohio

a man is surrounded by people with problems which are pretty symptimatic of modern life, but then he's like, "fuck that shit, i'm out." the point is, you shouldn't move underground. if anything, you should just go somewhere far away and do your own thing if the people around you are holding you back.

How advanced where psychological diagnosis in the time Dostoevsky wrote C&P? Raskolnikov had exactly the same symptoms I had when I was diagnosed with clinical depression.

I would think the symptoms in C&P would be closer to an anxiety disorder, but then again that and dep go hand in hand, as I know full well...

I thought Notes was really clever. At first I identified pretty strongly with the underground man, then as he embarrasses himself further and further, I think "I didn't even know someone could be this beta," then at the end he calls me on it with his whole "I have merely carried to an extreme in my life what you have not dared to carry even halfway." I felt so mindfucked.
