John Julius Norwich has done two about the Normans in Sicily. Not read either but I can vouch for him.

Hey anon im planning my trip for next month right now. Anyway

Norwich is excellent for a pop historian. He is a half decent writer and gives some good recommendations himself .

Also depending on which part of the island you visit i recommend your supplement your history with some texts on the Baroque. I liked Anthony Blunt's The Sicilian Baroque (or alternatively since it's on Archive and is almost the same, the appropriate chapters from the Baroque And Rococo Architecture)

Then obviously Lampedusa's The Leopard as well as his biography The Last Leopard: A Life of Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa.

Also remember that the Second Punic War was fought partly on the island and that the sack of Syracuse is largely responsible for the Hellenization of the roman empire. There are plenty of books there.

Sciascia is a fun writer and gives you the perfect temperature of the place. Mostly fun Mafia stories .

Salvatore Quasimodo is a light and lyric poet who feels very much 'of the island' (much more then say Pirandello) And one of the few Italian writers who does not adopt the northern pastoral lexicon of rivers and trees, choosing to write a more sparse Sicilian version of it.

Giovanni Verga is the the greatest of the islands writers (Though i cant imagine he's been translated) is absolutely unparalleled, even among the Russians, for his understanding for the people and the land they work.

Also the tv art historian Andrew Graham-Dixon made an excellent series about the island. Watch it, he is great fun and is a cut above most other popular historians working today.

Sicily has an unbelievably rich literature, considered that it's a relatively small island. Learn Italian and read Tomasi di Lampedusa, Lucio Piccolo, Giovanni Verga, Vincenzo Consolo, Gesualdo Bufalino and Stefano D'Arrigo.

Thanks Anon.
They are promising 20 to 25 so who knows.
I was in Cairo 7 years ago during the civil war,( I think I might have been one of a handful of tourists in the entire city, just me in an American couple who seemed completely oblivious to the occasional gunfire), it was about 37 to 45, can I handled it fine. But I do want to hike there at least a little bit .

De Roberto's The Viceroys. Another historical novel would be Natoli's I Beati Paoli, about a secret sect of assassins supposedly operating in Sicily, but I don't think it's translated.
Giuseppe Pitrè's works if you're interested in Sicilian folklore.
A lot of famous writers in the XIX century, like Goethe or Dumas, visited Sicily (among other Italian places of the Grand Tour), so you can read their memoirs.
Finally, since other key periods have already been mentioned (classical antiquity, the Normans, Baroque), I'd suggest you to read something about the Florio family, which left a mark on the island during the Belle Epoque, but I'm afraid the only available book in English is a bestselling novel (The Florios of Sicily).

I read classics at uni and when we studied the seventh letter, a large majority of the scholarship by worthwhile classicists pointed to it inauthentic. You had a few holdouts by know-nothings that can't even read Greek but they are definitely in the minority. There is actually an interesting split in classical academia between Anglos who pretty much universally believe it to be a fraud, and continentals who are more likely to believe it authentic.
