Why the schizo stream of consciousness parts though? Is it to filter the NPCs without an internal monologue. Is that why it's considered so genius?
I'm currently at the part where he's going to a bathhouse. Is there gay shit? Because I didn't sign up for that.
Also "Because she never let them in" is the main reason I haven't given up on this book yet.
I read Dubliners a couple years ago, then started portrait of the artist as a young man but hated the main character too much to continue.

Stream of consciousness allows more direct and in depth view of what the character is going through, saves the author from having to fall back on the narrator going "just trust me, bro" or awkwardly suggesting things through plot.

Try it with Ulysses Annotated. First chapter, and further, whole first part, is pitfall without it, it starts with character from Portrait of the Artist, and goes through nothing in some of the most painful passages of the book. After that, flow becomes much swifter, and easier to read. There's only one challenging chapter left in the whole book, but you will still miss some interesting tidbits without Annotated, so I'd still advise going with it. Novel is packed with detail, and intentionally goes through different literary styles, it's also cuck worship the book, so that's that.
