is it worth reading or is it a meme?

If you have an Ivory League education, it would appeal to you.

It's not bad. The dynamic between the crusty old woman who just wants to retire and the bored idiotic factory owner's wife projecting her proto-libtard beliefs on her was a highlight. It influential (i.e. copied a lot) so you have to give it that benefit before you judge it as contrived. Definitely worth reading once.

Skip the nonsense between Mr and Mrs Levy. Everything else is worth reading

It's probably my favorite novel but it's not for everyone. I grew up among the Catholic New Orleans Yats the book is about and I feel like I'd just find a lot of it weird if I didn't already understand the milieu of that culture.

Other than that a lot of it is just obnoxious satire of pseudointellectualism which is pretty funny. It's set in the 1960s but also weirdly prescient about the mannerisms of modern neckbeard e-debate culture.

Absolutely. Toole keeps an excellent mix of meta humor, highbrow, lowbrow, and straight-up slapstick. It's like Tintin: anyone can find humor in it, just in different ways

It's not as hysterically funny as /lit/ snobs like to say, but it is pretty funny. An amusing sattire about anon from before there was an internet.

I don’t know how the whole “A Confederacy of Dunces is comedic/satirical” thing got started. I guess it’s just one of those lit memes like Holden caufield raping phoebe or Lolita being an erotic novel or some shit. Anyway, it’s one of the best portrayals of a man with the world against him. Probably the most profound since The Apology. I’d really recommend if you want to get into the mindset of the normie and understand their malice against nonconformists.

>Lolita being an erotic novel
that dreck was first released by a porn publisher I just read recently.
there goes your theory.

because every other publisher either read the beginning and thought it was smut or knew the public would think it's smut so nabokov had to go with a smut publisher
but it isn't smut, the only erotic scenes are in the beginning and serve the purpose of displaying Humbert's perversion to the reader. Note that at NO point is intercourse eroticised, it's simply stated. The only erotic scenes are like when Lo puts her legs on Humbert's lap

Reads like a parody of a stereotypical /lit/ user, despite being written years before 4chan; even has big titted kike gf. Certainly worth a read if you are already here

obviously these social patterns must necessarily exist, and have existed for a long time, if not always.

>bought and read by smut fans

Nebekov wouldn’t have let it be published by them if he actually had a problem with the smut association.

They also published Beckett. If you find these books erotic you're far more perverted than Humbert.
