Finished the first novel after putting it off for nearly 20 years and thoroughly enjoyed it. I know most of the sequels, both by Frank and Brian, are incredibly controversial. At what point is it best to stop? Messiah seems to be a book a lot of people shit on but I'm enjoying it around 100 pages in.

Maybe read God Emperor of Dune. Ignore the rest. Read a synopsis of the events between the too books if you must.

Messiah was intended as an integral part of Dune, but for some reason (perhaps practicality) was published separately. It's essential reading.
Children of Dune fleshes out the Fremen culture. Read it if you want to be immersed in Fremen lore.
God Emperor is a tedious scene-setter for the later sequels. Slog through it if you have sufficient appetite for more Dune.
Heretics is good fun. It's about all the various power blocs trying to outmanoeuvre each other, which is what Dune books should be about.
Chapter House focuses exclusively on the Bene Gesserit, but is an exciting story in itself.
On no account read beyond that. The pseudo-sequels by Brian Herbert and others are purest trash.gdxwr

Some of my favorite parts of the first book were the long philosophical monologues during the acid trips, I've done a ton of psychedelics in my life so that's a part of the book I particularly responded to - I knew the broad strokes of Dune's characters and plot through meme osmosis, but I had no idea it was so psychedelic and spiritual.

From what I gather, the books continue to double down more on the monologuing and philosophy as it continues at the expense of the hero's journey stuff, which alienated a lot of normiess but I'm sure I'll dig God Emperor when I get to it.

The interesting thing about the Dune series is that you can find people who love or hate any given volume. Opinions vary because the books vary in content and style so you might as well run with it and make up your own mind.

I've read to God Emperor, and I have to say that none of the Dune books are all that similar to one another. From what I hear about the last two that tend holds.
People bounce off God Emperor because it's almost nothing but characters waxing philosophical at one another, but in a super weird and confusing way. I loved it, but I do think describing how Duncan climbs a cliff make a woman orgasm was an odd thing to include.

I did too back in the day. I enjoyed all 6 of Frank’s books. God Emperor is memorable but was one of the hardest ones for me to get through. Last two were great and explored a lot of different ideas. I’m glad they are not all the same.
