The author goes too far when he tries to connect Nietzsche's "discovery" with his terminal bout of madness. He's also probably wrong because it was not a matter of mimetic rivalry, contagion, or competition that led to the ascendance of Christianity as much as it was the actions of a few people in positions of power. That and the author is essentially making an argument from popularity.
