which one /lit/bros

>> No.22098647

They both have horrible sequels so it doesn't really matter unless you plan on starting each series.

hyperion looks cool what's it about

>> No.22099037

Dune was excellent, but as >>22098647
points out, the sequels simply sucked, and got worse with time. Chapterhouse is downright cringe... Hyperion is not as good IMO but is still a great read.

>> No.22099117

Read Dune if you want to know how the antichrist becomes a reality.

>> No.22099148

I almost got filtered by Hyperion. Took me a few tries but once you past a certain point it hooks you.

>> No.22099465

Ironically it was easier to get into Hyperion than Dune for me. Hyperion had good tech stuff and more exciting worlds and stories than Dune. Maybe it's because I enjoyed Canterbury Tales.

>> No.22099554

I've only read Dune and it's one of my favourites so yeah, Hyperion is on the to-do list.

Dune is FAR superior to Hyperion. Hyperion is overrated.

I’m the minority but personally I think Dune sucked balls. I’m 75% through Hyperion right now and enjoying it. Took a while to get hooked by it though like this anon >>22099148 said.

Hyperion is fucking trash. Dune atleast has some amusing well written characters and good story writing.

The Fremen should have killed everyone and but then stayed in the desert. Paul was a false idol.

I just finished Children the other day. It really is nothing but boring, meaningless filler, my god. God emperor is already more fun of a read ~50 pages in

>> No.22101636

god emperor sucks ass. people like the concept of the god emperor then they read the book, realize only 2 things happen, then pretend it's good online. you will appreciate the first book even more after reading herbert's shit sequels.

>> No.22101665

>>22101636
It's been a long time since I read it but all I remember is
>pretentious cynical philosophizing
>coombait all girl army
>fat incel falls in love
and nothing else

>> No.22101688

>>22101665
it starts off with a rebellion storyline then it's quickly abandoned about 100 pages in. it uses the character siona to set up the story for the next book. pretty much nothing happens for the rest of it. the couple forces plotting against the emperor are acknowledged by him right away as futile. people treat children of dune as a "bridge" book but god emperor is the ultimate bridge book into heretics and nobody likes those books anyways. all in all, people should ignore the books after messiah entirely.

>> No.22102001

Messiah is top tier but I do agree about God Emperor. I liked heretics and Chapterhouse much more

If there's one meme I'd like to wipe from the face of the internet, it's the God Emperor meme.
For some reason 4chan swarms with pseuds who pretend they enjoyed it. Probably because they genuinely think it makes them look intellectual. It's just a book full of navel-gazing and aimless conversations.

>> No.22102022

>>22102001
The purpose of God Emperor was just to set up the milieu of Heretics and Chapter House. Except Herbert did it in the most unsubtle and unreadable way imaginable.

Dune is a cultural touchstone on par with Lord of the Rings. Herbert is no where near the writer Tolkein is, his fingerprint is similarly unmistakable. The world of Dune is a testament to the imagination.
Hyperion is a bunch of weird shut. It's fun but it's no Dune.

I mean Paul. Always liked Dune, but it's because it has this unsettling effect (for me at least). It dawned on me one day that his story is legit how the antichrist's story would sound from the first person perspective and that's the reason for the feeling.

Thats a lie and you know it. Dune by itself is a bland scifi novel. Even the hardest defenders admit it doesnt get good until the sequels. Even his sons boring shit because it justifies their nerd canon.

>> No.22104113

I think its because he changed some of the characters that his father thought up and not in a good way.
>''The baron is fat because he was cursed by the bene gesserit after raping one''
Which isnt true, the baron is a fat faggot because he wanted to be one and it repulsed everyone around him and he enjoyed it. I think this is just one of the things that Brain herbert came up with. There was also one with a bastard atreides kid on caladan or some shit.

>> No.22104324

Definitely Dune but you have to read til the last one (not including Brian). People read the first one and say they didn't like Dune. That's like saying you read the hobbit and didn't like the Lord of the Rings, in my opinion. Reddit-tier behaviour.

The Baron is fat because he is an animal and cant control himself, which is why he eventually dies via Gom Jabbar. How the fuck could Brian Herbert not understand this
