Thoughts on them? Do you like them or are there better cheaper alternatives?

I'd rather buy an more expensive version if there is because they're very fragile

>> No.22097159

I think the sizing and format of their covers are really ugly and off-putting. They're slightly taller and wider than normal paperbacks. All that blank space taking half the cover, the ugly orange and boring font. Really crappy design.

I bought one and never again. Every second set of pages used too much ink and the letters are slightly blurred.

I am distraught by the iconography of a few dozen penguins on my bookshelf. I stick with Everymans library when I can. Probably pricier, but they'll last longer and look nicer.

I wish they made hardcovers that weren't clothbound and looked like the black paperback ones.

I lost respect for them when I learned one of their ancient Greek translations is made by a fake professor who believes in ancient aliens and does Chinese propaganda for a living. Always check the translator/editor

they slightly changed their design in like 2022 and the quality is also much worse... the pre 2022 penguin classics are actually pretty nice and durable

I adore how old Penguin Classics smell. Sweet and decaying, the way that their pages turn into this soft, yellowed brown, how their spines softly wrinkle. I always look out for them when I'm at a secondhand bookstore. Newer Penguins seem a little too rigid, almost.

As far as the editions themselves? They're usually fine. I like how Penguin publishes many classic books that are hard to get a hold of otherwise. I prefer Oxford World's Classics generally, their endnotes/essays tend to be a little better.

Oxford World Classics not only look better but are more solid books that have better end/footnotes.

I love Penguins, honestly. I don't get the hate in this thread for them. Their translations are generally quality, the books feel good in my hands (though there are a few less-than-great copies on my shelf), and I like how they look on my shelf. They get my seal of shill approval.

>> No.22099193

I like how they feel. The pages are soft and delicate rather than scratchy cardboard and the spine is flexible so the book stays open. Never again will I torture myself to 500 pages of a Signet Classic. You have to break the spine every few chapters just to read the words where the pages meet.

I love the smell of Penguins. For the money and the enormous list of titles they have, they’re one of my favorites. Not sure why they get the hate they do here other than “popular=bad”

Personally I just went to used bookstores and grabbed whatever they had for like $2 a piece. And that was years ago, today I wouldn't even do that. I do almost all my reading on my kindle or (god forgive me) phone. I mean, these are all basically in the public domain. Nothing is added by reprinting with some gay intro. It's more important to read these books than to show everyone you've read them.

>> No.22099714

You butthurted subhumans will never be truly white. You niggers used to eat grass, dance around rocks, bath in mud and live in huts until not long ago.
I don't care if you're whiter than a fucking albino, you people are niggers born with the wrong skin color.

I've enjoyed them. The paperbacks are of decent quality, though the ink gets smutty because I have sweaty hands. The books have great introductions and notes. Some good examples are Aeneid and Oresteia.
