Man I absolutely love Terry Goodkinds Sword of Truth series but EVERYONE on Reddit and just about every other platform fucking despise him

Every single online discussion of this series devolves into why he's a hack or why he's a shit guy with a bad personality.

Does everyone here hate his work too? I am working on my second read through of the books and am enjoying them even more this time around.

How can such a wildly successful fantasy series that sold so many millions of copies just be universally hated?

I don't get it, the man writes fight scenes and evil characters so well, his world is fully fleshed out and the way he describes environments, nature, castles, cities are some of the most immersive I've ever read.

Too much rape and violence? Do people just want near misses and sword fights where no is harmed and every woman is a girlboss?

I liked it a lot too but dropped it after the shitpost book.
>in the middle of a major climactic war arc built up to for half a dozen books
>an entire book about three random peasants in bumfuck whose only connection to the MC or the plot is that they heard about him once in a storyy and now hate him for some reason
>they spend the entire book wandering around accomplishing nothing planning to kill him somehow despite being obvious retards
>finally, in the LAST CHAPTER they stumble on him by chance as he's engaged in a battle with a much more interesting group of people
>they jump out from ambush and he decapitates them in one sentence
>the last paragraph of the book swaps back to his perspective and he turns to the camra and says "Woah, who the fuck were those guys? Oh well it's probably not important"
Like it's hilarious in retrospect, on par with the MC getting cucked by himself in a disguise, but having to ACTUALLY READ IT wasn't nearly as entertaining.

Still a great series with UNBEATABLE MEME POTENTIAL matching and exceeding Bakker a dozen times over while being, generally, more entertaining.
I mean is there any other series that could pull off a twist on the level of Frodo putting on the one ring in Mt Doom, revealing that actually he was Sauron the entire time and that really Gandalf was the evil one, and then having ten more books about leading the armies of Mordor to invade the western lands and liberate the elves from Eru's communist dictatorship? And also all the orcs are hot blondes in leather fetish gear who are genetically in love with him.

Generation Ship - Michael Mammay (2023)

Generation Ship is among the best political drama SF I've ever read. Mammay has also excelled in providing a depiction of the crew members daily lives, how and why their government functions, and the technology required to maintain their society. I believe the limitations inherent to the setting provide for some rather intriguing dynamics.

The Voyager is a first-of-its-kind colony ship with 18,000 people, a number that is strictly adhered to, that is only months away from completing its 250 year journey to Promissa, a planet in Zeta Tucanae, thought to be habitable with 97% confidence. The expectation that everything is soon to change disrupts the routines that have lasted for centuries and many start to question the value of the traditions and laws that have brought them this far. Each chapter opens with how many days remain. It's at least somewhat allegorical about the contemporary United States.

There are five viewpoint characters and each provides a distinct societal perspective. I don't know if they were literally meant to represent these concepts, but I saw them as Science, Outsider, Populism, Enforcement, and Authority. This allowed for a nuanced and panoramic view of how these forces interact and present their side of the story to each other. This is a character drama and each one felt appropriately written. I enjoyed them all.

In other terms of representation there's a lesbian, a gay guy, two nonbinary characters, and an aromantic woman. There's various context clues that at least a few characters are neurodivergent. None of that is a focus, though doesn't it feel like a checklist either. It's simply who they are and it's only relevant when the situation involved something related to it, which isn't often. There may have been more, but that's what I noticed. All of is this is presented as a normal way of being.

The lead up to the ending and the ending itself were the only parts I didn't like as much as it introduced an idea that I'm as biased against as I'm biased for generation ships. I've never liked it in any media that I've come across and this wasn't an exception. It's not so much that it detracts from my enjoyment as it that I have a preference against its inclusion because it bothers me on both a practical and metaphorical level. That and other late introduced ideas that I felt were out of place did lessen my enthusiasm, but the momentum leading up to it and that this is a book much more about the journey than the destination, let me put aside my misgivings.

Although Ursula K. Le Guin's Paradises Lost, a superb novella, focuses on religion while this doesn't at all, I was often reminded of it while reading this, especially about its ecological concerns. I'll definitely be reading Mammay's prior works, as though they are different from this, it's also the sort that I'm able to enjoy.

I received this DRC from Harper Voyager through NetGalley.

Upon further reflection and having slept on it, I've decided that due to recent events in the thread the most fun option would be to split this into two months. June is now Progression month and July returns to Self-Publishing month, which won't have any progression works or similar relatively recent style developments.

The very tentative four books for Progression month, June, for the Goodreads group will be:

LitRPG Novel: Dungeon Crawler Carl
LitRPG Webnovel/Serial: Worth The Candle
Xianxia-inspired Novel: Forge of Destiny
Xianxia-inspired Webnovel/Serial: Virtuous Sons

If you'd rather it be different, let me know. You don't have to explain why. You have roughly 30 hours to do so because I'm not going to set anything until a while after I wake up tomorrow. I don't know that there's a suitable western Xianxia inspired novel that's liked enough and hasn't been used. Yes, I know that DCC was serialized and maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like the books are more popular now, but I wouldn't know. Series like Cradle that were never serialized seem uncommon. Maybe just calling it episodic versus story arcs would be better.

Beware of Chicken seems too polarizing to use based on discussion and ratings.

Bastion isn't that well-rated, as is the case for a lot.

LitRPG seems to have a higher rating in general. Many Xianxia adjacent only have a one or two pulling for it here that I've seen. There are several I'd rather not put in general.

There are too many who seem to simply rate everything highly which complicates matter and a couple that rate most of lowly though still mostly read it overall.

For July, Self-Publishing, tentative choices:
Fantasy Novel: The Dragon's Banker
Science Fiction Novel:
Fantasy Webnovel/Serial: This Used To Be About Dungeons
Science Fiction Webnovel/Serial:

I don't give a shit about who authors/artists/musicians are as people. In fact, I do my absolute best to avoid learning anything about them. This isn't some "death of the author" shit, it's that I just don't care.
Also, I am a libertarian, so if he is a libertarian, ok. good for him. Doesn't change anything.

The first couple of books, maybe just the first, were ok (been at least a decade since I read them, so forgive the lack of specificity) and made me hope for the best.

From there it just went downhill so hard and fast. The whole election thing was pants on head retarded. Carving the statue was likewise huffing his own farts--I still remember getting annoyed everytime I'd come across him repeating something about the sublimeness of nature. The places he got philosophical were just such an artless trudge to get through. I felt like I was reading a watered down Ayn Rand, but with swords and less action for whole books that could be used as support columns. That just wasn't what I was there for. That wasn't the promise made by the first book or two. I mean, come on, fuck off with spending 500 pages running from city to city doing political campaigning, especially with the rug pull of "the other side is just coming behind us and saying "nuh-uh" and people believe them".

If I'm wrong about how long this went on and it was only like a book or a few chapters, then that says something too about the series: that and the disappointment about how it turned out (never read the last book, I think, so I probably missed the "it's you, you're the sword of truth" moment) and the tedium of reading someone's political intrigue but with SWORDS! and not even as good as Pratchett! that I remember.

>Yes, I know that DCC was serialized and maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like the books are more popular now, but I wouldn't know.

Bro, every single of those were serialized. Hell, Forge of Destiny is first and foremost a forum quest, then it was turned into a webnovel, to then be turned into a self-pub novel. Not arguing against it, your rationale just seems weird.

What I would question however is puting Forge of Destiny into a 'progression' month, given that...the story isn't a progression story. Yes, it's probably the only xianxia (with exception of maybe Beware of Chicken) that's NOT quite a progression story. It's a character driven drama set in a xianxia sect which has a talented cultivator for a protagonist. No more than any typical YA story where the main character is exceptional.

Beware of Chicken is a solid choice if you only want to read the first book as it degenerates into a normal xianxia in the second one, with the third being a massive failure among fans from what I've seen. But the first book is popular for a reason.

Possible replacement:
Speedrunning the Multiverse - The protagonist is a god-king of Time, Dorian, cultivator of the highest possible rank. Out of boredom, he regularly strips his soul of power and significant memories and then sends it into the lower realm to posses trash people on the verge of death, trying to achieve the fastest zero-to-Godkind time possible. Solid story, not a masterpiece but enjoyable anti-hero story. Theoretically has some litrpg elements, but they basically don't exist, so it doesn't count. Got a solid laugh from me a few times.
Releases on kindle July 11.
As for JULY:

For a sci-fi webnovel I want to recommend you Kitty Cat Kill Sat, haven't read it myself due to lack of time, but heard only good stuff about it from many people with better than average taste. However, it was taken down recently and the author is publishing it on Kindle on June 13. My other recommendation would webnovel '12 Miles Below', yet another story I haven't read and heard only good stuff about from the same aforementioned people. Some post-apo with very advanced technology on a frozen Earth, a lesser hit in a webnovel community.

Yet another possibility would be The Perfect Run - a known hit by an author who's written several finished webnovel. You must've seen it mentioned around here. Post-apo super-hero story with a protagonist capable of stoping time and even turning it back by 'loading a save-point.'

If you want something unconventional and risky, try System Overclocked written by (likely) the best harem author in the genre. The only book of his that doesn't use harem and erotica elements as the gratification but social commentary. Sci-fi set on a alien ship where humanity is enslaved and treated as pets by slien slimes.

It's not the author's fault. A fag is a fag, and there will always be fags. It's the publishing industry refusing to publish anything else. I don't care if they publish shit about fags being fags, but for goodness sake publish some other shit too.

Why wouldn't they want a well-rounded publishing shit.

Yes, I know they were all serialized. I said in previous posts, that wasn't the first, that if it wasn't possible to do so then it would be ignored. Having such stuff not be serialized seems be an outlier, which is why I said exceptions could be madem As it says, it's all very tentative. This is something I know all that much about, which is why I've been asking.

Speedrunning the multiverse doesn't seem suitable. Too obscure and doesn't suit my purposes in general.

Kitty Cat Kill Sat is a possibility.

From what I've seen of The Perfect Run, that would be more something for June, but I could be wrong. What I've seen about it is all over the place as to which subgenre it belongs to.

Not going to put System Overclocked. Seems too niche even within the niche.

Those books are good but the best parts are all the quick stories of what Saga got up to during their prime when monsters were everywhere and plagued humanity. They're always so much more interesting than what Fable gets up to. I get that it's the point of the books that they are not about Saga's prime, but it would still be nice to see more of that. I'd read a novel, novella, short story or whatever about the good old days.

Street Cultivation is average as fuck story that's known only because it has a servicable plot and it's the only known finished modern-setting xianxia. Otherwise, it's perfectly average. The picrel meme is real.
I'd recommend Defiance of the Fall, but it takes time for it to hit its xianxia stride, too much of a progression litrpg in the first two books. Other than that, there is very little xianxias worth recommending, like at all. The trashiest genre around. Only Infinity Realms is seriously good, but it's a hardcore litrpg at the same time.

Dungeon Crawler Carl
Worth The Candle
Perfect Run
Defiance of the Fall

I'm not seeing this Infinity Realms though. Provide a link or author and if you would.

Last point of contention. Which of these four should it be?

Worth The Candle
Posted about a lot, but surprisingly only 2 in /sffg/ have rated it, but as they both post reviews I place more into their opinion, if only to encourage doing so. On the downside it may be overposted about by one or two anons which I don't want to encourage. I also don't like the fanfiction elements I've seen people post about it. It's still the favorite to be chosen though.

He Who Fights with Monsters
The Primal Hunter

Do not fucking touch Randidly Ghosthound. Take Primal Hunter, even fucking HWFWM, but don't touch Randidly. There is nothing to be gained from reading it. One of the trashiest stories among big litrpgs, it's all over the place, with setting-swings depending on the author's mood. The plot's trash too. Just finished this series and really enjoyed it. Cool action, and cool magic, liked the characters (especially the various mercs). Felt more real since it tried to do historical fiction x fantasy. I thought the time in the dungeon was great, I liked the little arc around Donnyton and the kid having to grow into his role, I liked the psychological aspect of the bosses, the secret manipulation of the town spirits, the trip to the town trying traditional defense. To me it was unusually rich for the genre, which maybe isn't saying much but is still true. Anyway, not trying to sell you. It's good to be able to bail on things that don't appeal. For me I think I'd put it above Defiance but below Primal Hunter in terms of the level of engagement it gets from me.

And these fucking PoV changes, I can't handle them anymore. Every third chapter is from a different character's perspective. I especially hate To'Wrathh or whatever the fuck its name is, just there to spell out exactly what is going to happen later on in the arc.

I only liked the first one. Wise Man's Fear was very disappointing and made basically no progress for much of the book, then had Kvothe become a martial arts master and a sex god who even impressed the sex fairy, both of which might've been cool if explored properly but no, we had to rehash so much of the first book.
That being said his actual prose is of very high quality and I cannot fault his skills.

Agree'd for the most part. I think his following books will be better. I do think he will continue to write or start writing again.

The fairy sex and training were necessary because of Kvothe's reputation, but I admit he spent way too long on those parts. There is a charm to a meandering story, but when you are two books into a trilogy and you have barely done anything, it's a problem.

He's constipated right now. This novella coming out in November is like a piece of a small turd. Next we'll be a glorious shut that has stopped him up for over decade and after that, he will shit normally again. Hopefully.

No it's the exact opposite, he didn't spend enough time on those. It's the university where he spent too much time. Kvothe should've been expelled at the end of the first book so we wouldn't have had to spend more time there in the second.
>This novella coming out in November is like a piece of a small turd.
It's just a remake of a story he's already written, so it's more like a small turd he passed already with some paper wrapped around it

Currently reading Starship's Mage. It's surprisingly decent and fun. Characterization is weak but the biggest issue are constant continuity errors. From the top of my head, people changing hair color (one particular character was described as being a redhead and later a brunette in the same bookk, and then a blonde a few books later), some people being described as having X position and uniform and having a different one a few llines later. It's not constant but prevalent enough to notice.

I have minor nitpicks with the writing which is nothing to write home about but constantly repeated things like "eyes blue as ice" for half the characters in the first book but that seems to have improved after the first book.

If you're looking for a Sci-Fi for July under self publishing this guys book was pretty fun. Reminded me of Heinlein a bit and I'm pretty sure he threw in some Heinlein easter eggs as one of the ships is called the Sisu ala Citizen of the Galaxy. Plus there were definitely Dragon Lance easter eggs in there since some ships were named after main characters like the Fireforge,Brufoot, Brightblade etc.

Pulpy stuff survived by attracting new readers by offering titillation and excitement with its lurid escapism, and there are far more accessible media for that now. It's hard for S&S serials and novels to compete with video games. The kind of person who, 50 years ago, would've picked up Conan and loved it now just plays violent video games where they traipse around in a fantasy world with a controllable avatar and do the kind of stuff Conan does in the books. Granted it's never as richly detailed as the books would be, but doesn't require an active imagination to bring to life, and so it's easier for people to get into.

>HELP! I have a Nvidia card and my game crashes on startup!
Try the dgVoodoo option in the new win10fix settings.
Alternative: Update your AAU and see if it happens again. If so, disable win10fix, enable wined3d and software vertex processing.

Yep. I went from Vance, Dunsany, Peake etc to this "classic" series/writer and his prose feels so juvenile (for want of a better word)

I'm out. There's been way too much tranny shit in SF going on a decade now.
How about write a story about an ordinary person in an extraordinary situation like every other author.

To the anon who tricked me into reserving a Freewrite Alpha: I suffered buyer's remorse and returned it. Shelled out $60 for an Alphasmart Neo2 instead. Neat little device.

I have been trying to pinpoint why sci fi is so gay and hardly any of it is good, especially hard sci fi. And I've come to the conclusion that its because space is fake and gay and we all know it instinctively. It's all a lie yet we have books going over the "science" of it all. Explaining in great detail the ins and outs of the experience. And this is also why magic systems are retarded. It takes away the magic and turns it into a tangible science but it too is also fake and gay. It's just embarrassing to make stories try to be scientifically accurate when that is not possible. Just accept the whimsy, accept the unknown. You are never going to space in some nihilistic Blindsight space ship to see shitty aliens, sorry. The best I can give you is for you to take CIA drugs that make interdimensional reptilians come and rape you to death.
