I've been reading The Silmarillion lately, and it's beyond phenomenal. The Hobbit and LoTr were the first books (other than picture books and comics) that I read, and I decided recently to revisit Tolkien's world.
What are your thoughts on Tolkien and his works? Also, post recommendations for Tolkiencels.

I loved the Silmarilion, although I have some small gripes on the editing department.
You should read the other books, such as Unfinished Tales and the Three Tales.

A reddit comment unironically put it best: there just isn't any tension, ever, in the story. Any time any character seems in even the slightest bit of danger, a deus ex machina immediately bails them out.

silmarillion is great desu. i haven't yet read unfinishned tales, the history of middle earth, beren and luthien or the children of hurin. i do have read tolkien's other work like sir gawain and the green knight

>no tension
what about the slow boiling jealousy of feanor when he created the stones? the two trees being cut by morgoth and ungoliant? the battle of unnumbered tears? the slow descent of nienor into madness?
>deus ex machina
where was the deus ex machina when feanor was killed by balrogs? when fingolfin was fighting morgoth? when turin did literally anything?
it's a tragic retelling of elvish mythology, and tolkien accomplished in giving us a story from the elvish POV, compared to the hobbit and the LOTR which are from human/hobbit POV

>the slow boiling jealousy of feanor when he created the stones?
Not really any tension and not from the main villains.
>the two trees being cut by morgoth and ungoliant?
Then them cowardly running away from the Valar?
>the battle of unnumbered tears?
Eh, only won because of treachery. Also includes morgoth cowering in fear for some reason.
>when feanor was killed by balrogs?
Didn't he explode in anger and they couldn't kill him?
>when fingolfin was fighting morgoth?
Gone once he started inexplicably beating the everloving shit out of morgoth.
>compared to the hobbit and the LOTR which are from human/hobbit POV
It's a problem across all of tolkien's books.

i dunno bro you seem to be trying too hard to not like it, it's ok though, lots of people enjoy its writing. nobody here is claiming it's anything more than genre fiction

It's not a novel though. It was never meant to have tension or a narrative in the way that the Hobbit or LOTR did. It was just an outlining of his own mythology. If you take it for what it is it's a good read(assuming you have an interest in that mythology)

For one, the writing is of a very old and authentic nature - similar to that of many epics throughout history, including The Bible. Though, as someone with an English/Literature major, I am a bit of a sucker for such prose as this. As well as the many iconic tropes of classic fairy tale stories, and Nordic mythology.

You've also got to be quite a LoTr nerd to really appreciate the piece, as someone who grew up reading the books and watching the movies I am excited and enthused to learn about the world that captured my childlike wonder and fed my imagination for so many years.

LOTR is the best book I’ve ever read, and I’ve started to feel a little jealous of the lifelong philologist and soldier whose whole life in the end added up to this magnum opus.

I like to imagine a Hobbit Alex Jones who sells fuckin’ foot toupees or something because hairy feet are a sign of vitality for hobbits.
