What's some cleverly written 21st Century literature? Something with relatable characters, that doesn't put expectations on the reader, a book that surprises every other page, serious topics funnily written, nothing explicitly political, a dull ignorance about everything that is political nowadays, criticism where it is childish and dull, humble and clever at the same time but realistic and in touch with reality. Gruelsome things can happen but the story has to go on optimistically right afterwards.

Douglas Coupland. His best work is arguably 20th century, but something like Elanor Rigby qualifies.
