One good trick is to do you best to remember as closely as possible what you say when the occasion arrives in which to have to tell a story to someone. Preferably, you'd want to tell this story and are confident you'll tell all the important parts and at the end there is some resolution to the tale.
Try to remember how you did it, the words you used, how you started, all of it. Even if you did it poorly, the telling, you can use this trick to get better.

Another good trick is to read stories in which there are characters themselves telling stories. This gives you a good overview of the options you have as reference.
