While I understand the hatred for this man and his pimple-faced, mawkish yarns, there is a not insignificant part of me that sees itself compelled to pay him a fair amount of respect: he limited himself to a single genre, perfected all the tired tropes of that genre, ergo knows exactly what his audience wants to hear and goes so far as to shape his public personality around these expectations - and profits and profits and profits while we sit at home and post on 4chan on Sunday.

I see it as a sad clown begging the audience for scraps. The crowd ands for him take take another pie to the face and he obliges happy for their brief acknowledgment

A sad clown sitting on mountains of cash with the leisure to write decent and real literature if he had the desire or capability. It's such a waste

Royalties make you complacent, even lazy. People on royalties are not spurred to make anything good (or at least new).

He scooped the cystic ones out and ate them, enjoying each one with consummately equal pleasure, and it was not so much the taste that he savored, but rather knowing that he treated each one fairly.

He and his brother are really just good at marketing and seizing opportunity. His first novel was really only moderately successful. He was able to get the sales necessary for broader recognition because of the audience he garnered with Brotherhood 2.0 on YouTube. His brother ended up doing the same thing with SciShow, they started VidCon right on the upswing of influencer content, etc. He got a movie deal because of his popularity online. He didn't generate an audience with his writing.

>Me: “I refuse to attend Support Group.”

>Me: “Please just let me watch America’s Next Top Model. It’s an activity.”
>Mom: “Television is a passivity.”
>Me: “Ugh, Mom, please.”
>Mom: “Hazel, you’re a teenager. You’re not a little kid anymore. You need to make friends, get out of the house, and live your life.”
>Me: “If you want me to be a teenager, don’t send me to Support Group. Buy me a fake ID so I can go to clubs, drink vodka, and take
pot.”
>Mom: “You don’t take pot, for starters.”
>Me: “See, that’s the kind of thing I’d know if you got me a fake ID.”
>Mom: “You’re going to Support Group.”
>Me: “UGGGGGGGGGGGGG.”
>Mom: “Hazel, you deserve a life.”
jesus fucking christ. i can't believe writing this bad could get past any editor alive.

what gets me the most is the complete fucking audacity to attach this trainwreck to shakespeare. i know that he doesn't really hold any allure for his skill in writing as much as he is a generic Literary Figure available for reference (and one, conveniently, with which everyone is familiar), but holy fucking shit.

Yes, it's obviously shit, but it's shit that is, considering the constraints of the genre, well-written. This is point of the original post: it is, by any thinkable objective measure of writerly ability, nothing but the inert and sour word smegma of a below average poetaster - but for that very reason, a paragon of excellence for the genre which he has claimed and mastered. Hence the sort of perverse respect he deserves.

idgaf about what anyone says, as they should not give a fuck about what i will say. This man is a legend. he started a small internet phenomenon by simply talking to his brother on camera, made a career out of it, and got many teens interested in reading in the process. all respect is due to John Green.

Does he do all the videos on YouTube that are like high level overwiews of things we learned in high school but forgot? I think that guy is pretty chill. Not everything published needs to be profound. Sometimes you just need a little something to jog your nog.
