I don't know why would anyone try to break out or make it big into the book industry when nowadays is just neo-potism and identity politics and when self-publishing is now easier than ever. In fact, this applies to other industries like music, movies or video games.
It seems that for millennials the idea of success boils down to an economic one rather than their own achievement or self-satisfaction so they aim to be the next John Green, Rowling, Meyer, King, etc.
Altogether, even in the old days, living from publishing book was hard and most writers had side jobs. It wasn't until Hollywood adaptations that writers like J.K. Rowling or Stephen King could make millions from their work.
