Ligotti isn't surreal his aesthetics are inspired by european decadence/weird fiction which is a different canon from surrealism. Although you can say he is a post-modernist. His stories are not suppose to be "scary" in conventional horror sense but they are weird on philosophical level. But to expect some great message from fiction is foolish. Ligotti's fiction puts me in a really weird place mentally like contemplation. So I mainly read Ligotti for atmosphere.
