Where do I start with Wendell Berry?
I hear his name mentioned around in all kind of agrarian, neo-romantic and anti-system circles.
What are his essential books to understand him?
I would be more interested in his non-fiction, but his fiction and poetry recs are also welcome.

Unsettling of America is his flagship book. He talks a good bit about farming, but connects it to all sorts of social, political, and cultural critiques. As far as his non-fiction goes, once you've read one of his non fiction books you've pretty much read them all. He talks about a lot of the same topics over and over again. Unsettling of America is a good overview of his ideas. Maybe buy an essay collection if you want to hear a topic more in depth. Just look up the included essays and choose a collection with topics you want to hear about. He has several essay collections, but I wouldn't buy more than one. Like I said he mostly covers the same topics over and over again so things get pretty redundant pretty quick. His poetry is pretty good too. I haven't read his fiction works.
