Yeah - I'd agree that a clean slate brain is better (for contributing to the humanities) than a brain filled with shit ideas which aren't properly categorized as shit.

But to build something new on the foundation that we've inherited requires one to perceive/understand that foundation.
This isn't required for completely new domains (one with no existing foundation). Though you would expect a lot of wasted time reinventing wheels if you were not learned.
