Lord of Light is pretty up there. A reincarnation clone cult shaped into Hindu/Buddhist expressions.

But I'd have to say Glorantha's religion as a whole are the best in the genre lit realm: There are so many different expressions of religion that fit every reality faced by their worshippers, but my favorite would be the God Learners. God Learners realized that you could reenact myths and change them subtly to change the actual mythological history of the world, reshaping the current reality. This did very well to them until they got genocided by the gods after another cataclysm snapped back mythology somehow, and also humanity lost sea travel privileges for a long time. The gods just didn't want people to be on the water I guess.

Book of the Long Sun has actual monsters from mithology which are actually supercompoters designed after the family of the ruler of the universe. What's interesting, they actively interact with people.

I just started Elric of Melniboné. I didn't believe it was awesome as you guys say, but my mind is blown. I also learned a lot about Neil Gaiman's fapping habits from back when he was in boarding school. No idea why he put this in the foreword.

The more I learn about famous and powerful people, the more I'm inclined to believe men really want to have several women, on permament basis. Obviously harems are a bit much, and men don't even really want to have sex with many women, but 2-3 girls? Men would want that, real emotional connection with multiple women at the same time. Word 'powerful' is used here losely, I mean all kinds of high-value men who have largely intrinsic worth. Famous writers, politicians, high-achievers...all of them fuck around and cheat all the time. You simply can't constrain powerful men from having sex with other people if they can.

As such, little harems are quite likely the ideal of male romance/family structure. I wonder what will be the societal impacts of the new age of humanity. I expect polygamy to grow if men can afford it. Harem truly is the romance genre for men.

I have Asimov in my collection and the the prequels have an introduction from Asimov himself. It's amusing to read how once upon a time he enter an elevator where he met a fan who urged him to write more of Foundation series, which put Asimov in consternation, since...it was so many years ago that he forgot what Foundation was about except for in general terms.

Then he wrote the prequels, which were successful enough to continue the series. Hilarious.

New Voices in Chinese Science Fiction (2022)
Edited by Neil Clarke, Xia Jia, and Regina Kanyu Wang

Introduction - Xia Jia (2022)
I was surprised by the quality of the works in this anthology. Then I saw that they almost all won a prestigious award for the best SF of the year in China. That seems appropriate to me. In the introduction Xia Jia writes that we're in the Post-Liu Cixin era. That seems like a good thing to me, especially going by the stories included, and because I'm not a fan of his work. As to whether it's true, I wouldn't know. She also notes that this anthology was a stretch goal for her Kickstarter campaign to have her first English science fiction collection published. I'm not much a fan of her writing either, so I may or may not read A Summer Beyond Your Reach later.

My Family and Other Evolving Animals - Shuang Chimu, Carmen Yiling Yan (2019)
The year is 2119. In four years a new space megastation, one of almost a hundred already in space, will set off to begin its deep space ecological experiments. This story is almost entirely speculation about how ecosystems may change in space, with a focus on fruit flies. Its scientific narrative is presented through the lives of a particular family, especially the youngest daughter. This was a pleasing speculative slice-of-life story.
Enjoyable

The Bridge - Liu Xiao, Andy Dudak (2019)
I think I would like this story if I knew the specific context for its allegories rather than only vaguely being about the changes that modernity has brought to isolated areas. I assume it's an allegory about Atulie'er and other cliff villages in China, though that may only be at face value.
Ok

Tombstone - Yang Wanqing, Andy Dudak (2017)
Catastrophic climate disasters brought forth the Great Scattering of humanity. New Anchorage, population twenty million, is one of the last bastions of civilization that remain. Everything is devoted to Osiris Tower, which promises an afterlife through the creation of a soul. This is told through the life of a Charon, a ferryman of the dead, and his relationship with the love of his life. I wasn't liking this for almost half its duration, but by the end I was won over by its allegories.
Enjoyable

PTSD - Hui Hu, Rebecca Kuang (2016)
A VR journalist seeking clout radicalizes a young boy online hoping to goad him into becoming viral content. Four years later working at NetLord (NetEase) the consequences of his actions have caught up to him in a way that he never could've seen coming. This was a fun SF thriller about being unable to tell the difference between fantasy and reality. It also considers some problems that may arise from 3D printing and virtual reality.
Enjoyable

By Those Hands - Congyun "Mu Ming" Gu, Judith Huang (2018)
I'm astounded by the masterful craft that created this beautiful work. Its emotionality is admirable and its science praiseworthy. A master bamboo weaver is distraught that he will not be able to pass on his craft and that all the traditional ways are being replaced by low-quality automation. A neuroscientist with a specialty in hands is distressed about the kinesthetic knowledge that is lost upon death. Perhaps by using the newest technologies traditional ways may yet be preserved.
Highly Enjoyable

The Kite of Jinan - Liang Qingsan, Emily Jin (2017)
In the introduction to this book this story is called "fictional nonfiction", which is apt. This story is simply a guy who saw something he thought was interesting and unsolved in the historical record. In this case the truth behind why a series of gunpowder workshops exploded and whether the primary suspect was indeed responsible. So, he took it upon himself to deeply research the matter for no other reason than personal curiosity. This is probably somewhat similar to the research that goes into making edutainment videos on Youtube. One example would be some of the videos CGP Grey has made. This was more interesting and enjoyable than may be expected.
Enjoyable

Pixiu - Shi Heiyao, Andy Dudak (2018)
A biologist is hired by a mining company to create a new bacteria that can bioleach low quality ore effectively and as cheaply. He relates its development to his relationship with his grandmother from his birth to her death. There's a considerable amount of philosophizing about the purpose of life and the nature of interpersonal relationships, including for bacteria.
Enjoyable

The Postman - Liao Shubo, Rebecca Huang (2016)
An interstellar postman keeps receiving messages from a little girl asking if he has any mail for her. He doesn't and he takes a memory-erasing pill after he finishes delivering the mail, but then one day...
Meh

I gave it an honest try but I just didn't like the bit I read and it didn't hook me. IIRC I found the protagonist unlikable in a way that was annoying rather than relatable or fascinating, and his sister reminded me more of secondhand anime gripes than of any sisters I've met in real life.
Does it get better? Should I push through? I have read a few million words of ratfic, I'm not opposed to it in principle.

The sister is really quite minor all things considered. Zorian is also not really meant to be all that likeable, as I understand. He's selfish. You're kind of meant to look at it like Groundhog Day in that sense, except less "spiritual journey to being a better person" and more "just becomes better over time because circumstances".

Yeah, I saw it more as a sign that the author's aesthetic sense didn't get along with my own.
>Zorian is also not really meant to be all that likeable, as I understand. He's selfish.
But like I said, I didn't find him relatable or fascinating. Juniper Smith is a dipshit but he's just like me (fr) and that makes it worthwhile. Patrick Bateman and Charles Kinbote have repulsive psyches and would be insufferable in person and they never even grow as people but they're bizarre, they're interesting, I can't stop watching because I want to figure out what their deal is.
It sounds like Zorian has less to offer.

Yeah fair. I personally don't have a super high opinion of MoL (I think it's pretty good, but not that great) because it takes a while before any of the interesting characters show up and actually have a presence. Zorian is the major one for the first two arcs and he's just... Not enough to carry it, in my opinion. He's good when he has character dynamics to work with, but he's a solo player (basically by choice) for FAR too long.

Peter Watts is an exemplar of science-fiction as a magic lantern show. If you go in while the tent is dark, and remain ignorant to the lantern's workings then there's a strong illusion that can easily confound you and force you to reconcile with radical new possibilities that you seemingly can't account for in an ordinary way.

But once you've learned the twists he prefers, once you've kind of gotten his themes, or even if you've just heard something similar before, then the magic is pretty much gone and what's left is a presentation that lies very flat, I have notoriously asked everyone I know who's finished the book and claimed to deeply love it to name a single character from it: that knowledge seems to have fled from them as soon as the inquiry starts.

The entire first trilogy is drenched in what it means to be a man, what it means to have free will, what it means to think and how one can shape the thoughts of others. It's basically Kellhus learning what it is that makes a man and how to fully manipulate man for the entire first trilogy.

I didn't mean that it was deeply philosophical, in that you need to be a massive egghead to understand it. A better way of putting it would be the entire first trilogy (more or less) is spent exploring the philosophy of what it means to be a man / the philosophy of man while occasionally having a battle scene. It's not particularly deep head scratching 'digest for a year and come back' philosophy, but it's far more than most other fantasy series even consider entertaining.

Then or now it just never hit me as substantial or much engrossing. It's just there, not a bad element but far from a highlight or anything to think about to me.
Comparing it to Dune makes a lot of sense in hindsight although I think it's much more thought provoking in Dune (which may be unfair since it's one of those definitive sci-fi books though I'm not ride or die for it like some people are).

If that shit does pop off later I may continue to the next series as I only ever finished The Thousandfold Thought and never went further.

I want to like this, it has a super cool concept, the author has a writing style I like, and there's a lot of interesting ideas. It's waisted on the protagonist though, he's got far too much personality (spunk, maybe? Strength of will?) for someone that's supposed to be pathetically addicted to his android gf and isn't really useful or even especially liked by her, and the plot itself is a shallow b-movie copy of Neuromancer. The story should have been about Peter. Less action, more sex, gore and body horror. It was so close to being good.
The Human Front did nothing wrong.

Finished this one about ten minutes ago. What a great conclusion. I've been patiently waiting since the first book for the Patriarch to take a major role, and the author fucking delivered. He and Space Christianity in general were ultra based. Also loved that illusion magic was literally the only power the main antagonist had and the way it was used. And the magic system, while less prominent than it was in the second book remains one of my absolute favorites. Maybe I'm even a little bit salty that she ended up erasing it all together with everything that made this setting so perfect for adventuring, but I gotta hand it to the author, she brought every plot thread to a pretty satisfying, definitive conclusion. And the main focus of the trilogy, the way in which Vryce and Tarrant went from enemies to temporary allies to true friends over the the course of the story was handled exceptionally well.

Really good stuff. Kudos to the anon who recommended it to me over a year ago.

I just finished it. It was good, though not exactly what I was hoping for—I'm a sucker for melancholic reflections on inevitable irreversible loss, but most of the melancholy had drained away by the end. The science also felt on the optimistic side: I could buy the possibility of it all, but the progress appeared sped up by a factor of 10 in order to enable the plot.
The first half did scratch the itch. If the rest were finetuned to my personal taste then the events would be more tragic, or if the bare events were kept intact then the commentary would have acknowledged the inevitable gaps at the edges, where technique informs artistic judgment, since you can't capture that without going a good bit further. (It's notable that the story involved an exact replica.)
But that's just me, and I did enjoy the actual tone for what it was. I also liked the characters and the Chinese perspective. I am glad I read it.

He's too perfect for a normal man to self insert into. He's my role model, but I can't imagine myself as him. Maybe in the flashback chapters, but not after the first 500 years.

I'm not sure on SA Archer, but DB King is a shlocky LitRPG writer that may just be a ghost-writer group pen name. The rest are shlocky erotica writers that are almost certainly ghost-writers under a singular pen name.

Yeah, the melancholy goes away because it was to show how skills can be made more general. It's all the same skill employ differently, the restriction is both the human mind and society. There wasn't all that much difference between weaver and surgeon from a kinesthetic view. The science is quite optimistic and I think it intentionally cheery view on its practical implications. Not every story has to about the potential abused and negatives though. There's a few other Chinese stories I've read that are similar to this in the various anthologies I've read. The stories in general do provide a different perspective, which I appreciate.

It is effectively a self-insert story, but the college part is almost completely irrelevant because the isekai turns into a combination of Arthurian legend, Norse mythology, and Christian eschatology

i read most of his stories and i came to the conclusion that he's racist.
i mean ,there are no blacks in his stories. and no blacks among the harem.
in this story (space justice) ,he even meet and become king of this space viking clans who are clearly emphasized to be more beautiful, stronger, better disciplined and have more advanced tech ,and of course ,they are all white.
i still enjoyed it ,of course . But if it was more mainstream ,many will be pointing the race finger at him.

Honestly I've read a fair few harem stories, there's VERY few non-white girls in them. Sometimes they have weird skin colours if it's fantastical races and whatnot, but I don't really recall any black women in any of the stories I've read. Granted I've forgotten a lot about most of them.

Most of them are white or asian, yes.
Though MSE really his white girls .

I'm more than ready to be refuted on this and I have no sticks in the matter , but it seems to me that most harem lit writers fall on the right side of the political spectrum.
Then again. It may only appear that way to me because they dare write of masculine men . Polygamy, feminine women and heterosexual relationships. Which, may I remind you, is quite revolutionary these days .

I feel like some are largely apolitical and just writing fun stuff. You can sort of tell if they're more left-leaning in some stories where it's clear how much consent and communication is a big deal, compared to others where it's just "man takes woman". Even as a lefty, I kind of enjoy both stories because they're fun explorations of the same notion.

He does seem to prefer white girls so much he even made Z whose planet is culturally indonesian (I think) ethnically white but he also made the Tamer MC half-Korean despite the covers showing him to be obviously 100% Caucasian.

I think by 4chan standards he would be a cuckservative and most other authors are just left-of-centrists who aren't that invested in third-wave feminism but definitely support the LGBTQ+ community.

>has become the current "white male fantasy" literature.
you really don't need to be white to be repulsed by wokeness.
i will not claim that my taste is the best nor impose it on anyone but i mostly read self published and non-mainstream for this reason.
i believe it's also the reason why anime and manga make much greater waves in third world countries than American produced media.
even in my university ,you would find people that can be classified as ' delinquents' discussing the latest one piece chapter or girls with jujutsu kaisen and demon slayer shirts on ,but nobody talk about Netflix or marvel.
once you leave California ,anything saturated with wokeness become hard to digest ,but once you reach my country it become alien .
which would push a person to find a different entertainment culture to enjoy

>you really don't need to be white to be repulsed by wokeness.
Yeah, it was more about the fact that "for some reason" anything woke tends to be "coincidentally", or 90-95% of the times, anti-white, especially fantasy and sci-fi, where the zeitgeist is pushing for "diversity" and "inclusion" and ostracizing the usual "old white dudes".
So, it's not a surprise that lots of anti-woke white guys tend to write fantasies about having harems of beautiful women (which tend to also be almost all white), which tend to create an echo chamber that gatekeeps itself.
I mean, why reading harem fantasy if you don't like the concept of harems? Pretty hard to justify to your feminist progressive friends, am I right? ;)
>i believe it's also the reason why anime and manga make much greater waves in third world countries than American produced media.

Latin countires love Saint Seiya like you wouldn't believe, even in hardcore islamic countries Dragon Ball is really liked.

There are some harem stories that are basically female-led relationships with the MC being the happy, semi-sapient dildo for a bunch of bisexual boss girls (Arand even made a third pen name where he writes femdom) and shit like Good Intentions that goes full cuckoldry. The reddit crowd also loves those female harem writers like Misty Vixen who all used to write cuckshit pseudo-harems.
