Japanese culture is far more reserved and traditional than it would appear through the many examples of what non-traditionalism would like like, which are there to be provocative to stand out amidst conformity and normality. In addition, there are histories of war and conflict, imperialism and militarism, spiritism, Buddhism and its emphasis on non-attachment and not associating with the mind, so we have these mixed messages that are about being serious and not serious, repressed and not oppressed, not rocking the boat and rocking the boat. What is creative freedom, freedom of expression. What matters when everything does and does not matter, is and is not important. Do elaborate systems of rules and politeness matter, or do they make you a submissive cuck, so that going against the rules is the more authentic expression. China would do well to learn to not take itself so seriously.

Japanese art feels special because they're an incredible schyzo country. They had 4 coup attempts during the 30's because the army though that imperial Japan wasn't right wing enough (obviously the common element was that the people pushing it had to be the ones in control, but they all tried to give it an ideological twist). A couple decades before that they had a traditionalist conservative movement that mocked city people for being faggy wanna be westerners that showered and didn't have gay sex. A couple decades before that, late 1800's, they implemented an european aristocratic system (almost a hundred years after the french revolution, at a point when even most of europe and the american continent had some sort of liberal constitutional democracy). At that time they liberated slaves from an US ship, because slavery is immoral, and when questioned about their slave prostitutes they said it was different because those were cows. They adopted christianity to be like the west so they burned thei budhist temples, but they had those because they took the chinese religion to limit the power of the shinto based emperor, but shinto is the government version of the indigenous religion that they stole to claim ownership of their land mixing it with stuff that they erased from history so even they don't have a clear picture of their own original religion.

All their advancements were tied to bigger countries invading them and bizarre power struggles for a landmass smaller than Zimbabwe or Paraguay or Sweden. Anything the country was developing by itslef was tossed aside for the new fad over and over again for a millenia, so most people not interested in the studying the rest of the world assume that countries work with huge unjustified changes that just happen with no explanation.
