yeah I use bookmarks and have a notebook of what I think about it, as well as notes on what happens currently every few pages and quotes I like
making these types of notes helps me remember books better and I think it makes reading more active process

I annotate with the same stuff in my philosophy books, color coded for each reading.
For instance, my Being and Time has annotations in blue slips for the time I read it with an interest in its metaphysical impact, greens for the time I read in contrast to Husserl and Merleau Ponty red for the time I read it with a mind towards phenomenological psychopathology, and so on.
Each color code has an associated notebook where I wrote down my thoughts, expansions, counterarguments, etc.
I don't do it with fiction. With fiction I just write down whatever I think is particularly great or thought-provoking in my regular journal.

my gf had the most delicately annotated notebooks, written in the finest cursive private school can impart. She would write out these elaborate notebooks, full of drawings and note and observations, and every year i watched with horror as she threw them out to start new ones.

She would also buy Japaneses stationery from specialty websites for exuberant prices. Automatic pencils for 50$, little notebooks for 70$, odd assortments of glue and pieces of paper for 40$. I cant complain she'd given me a taste for calligraphy and i now own and use a 300$ white gold Waterman Carene fountain pen that she gave me.
After we broke up I inherited some of these things and have been rationing her Triomphe and Tomoe River writing pads that average out to about 2$ a sheet.

My own handwriting is barely legible for the most part but occasionally i still find myself writing out perfect little sentences in the most delicate business cursive script you can imagine. And i know im doing it in emulation of her.

True in my very limited experience too. It helps to narrow down a list of small/middle-tier people in your niche - not strictly booktube either as sometimes there are related YouTube content genres. Also your 'packaging' cover design and such is the single most important thing to nail. It's not that people are shallow, it's just the first thing every single prospective readers sees and must decide to turn past - so having a amateur looking cover is like misspelling your own name at the top of a resume.

I use those little tabs. They're useful. I don't think any one of my book has more than 10 tabs though. I try to keep it only to the best passages or most important reference points. Too many tabs like in your pic makes them useless. Putting a tab on everything is like taking notes by copying a textbook word for word.

Real chads live nonwriter lives, write their memoirs and fictions and leave it to be discovered decades after their death. Baking your cake and getting the recipe canonised too rarely happens in the timeframe of your life and especially not in the modern age. With an expansive established canon and sea of crap books in any genre filling up book stores, reading good contemporary works has never been harder. Write for the sake of what you want to write and be someone that has sonethihg worthwhile to write. Do it jyst for your family or friends if you want to be read by others so bad.

one time i got a $0.01 + shipping used paperback copy of "Things Fall Apart" and every page had multiple post its, plus highlighting. based on the margin handwriting, color choice, and general retardation, it was obviously a college girl's copy. she essentially highlighted the book in its entirety, meaning that her efforts amounted to nothing.

Wrong. They do it because of their nesting instinct to decorate and organize. The book is decorated with little labels in pretty colors, and the information inside is organized with annotations. It's a most natural and healthy manifestation of feminine instinct. But, because we live under this myth that men and women are equal (the same), we mock women instead of understanding them. In truth, you could do no better than to find a woman like the one in OP's image. She has healthy interests (reading), she has healthy instincts (organizing and decorating), and she's not an autist (participating socially in her interest). i use the org-noter package for emacs. i like it because most of my books are pdfs, and i can link to different sections, files, and notes. also, i can export them to nice-looking digests for easy re-reading.

i think those little tab sticky note things would only work for me if i just used them as pointers to full-size pages in a notebook, or something. i get too stressed out without a lot of space to write.
