Guess someone needs to learn what the pluperfect form is. There’s a difference between “He had had a bad day” and “he had a bad day.” Stylistically it looks odd, sure (which is why I’d say just write it with a contraction: “He’d had a bad day”), but there’s a reason the pluperfect form exists.
