I have been three years on this board. I learned many things. I improved myself.

I regret the decade (!) spent on plebeian boards like /b/, /tv/, /sp/, /mu/ etc., but I guess it’s been a necessary development. Three years of /lit/ + ditching vidya and booze made me grow a lot despite turning 30 already.

It is our mission to make lit a place of intrigue and discovery. Although pretentious a lot, it is still a worthwhile endeavor to put forth effort for the betterment of scholarly pursuits. I ventured here because of the medical threads a decade ago and was urged to lurk maor. Lit lacks the diversity it once held and it is up to us to provide the groundwork for others as it was done before for us oldfags. There are many paths to take through knowledge like selfish isolation, wick propaganda, or benign enlightenment but may these books be the stones beneath our feet propelling us forward toward our destiny.

What are the best books that /lit/ has recommended to you?

>> No.21993118

It's all about using the "hide" function. Usually about 100 threads should be blocked. Then this board can be quite interesting.

>> No.21993203

There's a lot of stupid insufferable faggotry here but honestly some of the best book recommendations I've ever gotten in my life have been from /lit/.

I'm not a huge fan of Stoner but it was the first book I remember reading because of lit and it was very good.
I think sffg turned me onto The Broken Sword which was excellent.
Lately I've been tearing through the Second Apocalypse because the incessant posting of the Bakkerfags finally got me curious and fuck me I think I'm a Bakkerfag now.

>> No.21993274 [DELETED]

It turns out there is a few select boards on this godforsaken website which allow true human flourishing to occur, and /lit/ is one of them. Some people here are actually pretty intelligent.

>> No.21993295

i would have agreed maybe 10 years ago, but now there is way too much really lame shit on /lit/. then again the first /lit/ rec i read was gravity's rainbow, so obviously it's been kinda downhill since.

Shit board, shit website. You guys are excited because you found some good books and saw some informative posts. When I was new here I experienced the same thing. Later on I checked the archives and looked at those same threads. They were mostly garbage but I didn't notice at the time because of those few intelligent posts that really blew my mind. Your perception of this place depends on what had a bigger impact on you at a particular point in your life. Truth is everything is always in flux. Because really, I myself was in wonder at /lit/ in the beginning. Reality sets in soon enough. This place is supposed to be a phase. Don't outstay your welcome.

>> No.21993372

>>21993352
yup. once you've read some pynchon and some greeks, you've gotten pretty much all the value /lit/ has to offer. after that you can listen to any great books lecture series or literature course to find any other important books without having to sift through a ton of goofy trash.

It seems to be in perpetual decline although there are anomalous pockets of quality posting here and there but those are getting rarer and rarer. In the past two years alone you can see that almost all of the effortposters have gone and they were right to. Best not get stuck here.

The sad truth is, all you did (or really most people who migrated here from other boards like /v/, /mu/, /tv/, etc.) was change out your pretentious, elitist cinema nerd identity out with a pretentious, elitist literature nerd's. But hey man, at least literature is a whole lot more useful than movies, that I'll agree with.
