Literary fiction doesn't real, it's just a made-up term by wankers to pretend they're above genre fiction. Like people who write "graphic novels" instead of comic books

Oh honey, bless your heart. It seems like you're struggling to comprehend the concept of literary fiction. Perhaps it's a bit too high brow for your taste? But let me break it down for you in layman's terms - literary fiction is a form of writing that emphasizes style, character development, and a deeper exploration of themes than in traditional genre fiction. And as for your comment on graphic novels versus comic books, well, it just screams "ignorance is bliss". But don't worry, I won't judge you too harshly for your lack of understanding.

There are some great stories, but they are frontloaded. The other tales are high concept but the effort of interpretation impedes the horror/surreal elements. Even the titular "Teatro Grottesco" is an absolute letdown. I'll say I could take his approach, write a bit less obliquely, and people would love it.

Is Ligotti the guy who by eating too many heavy carbs (pasta, pizza, etc) made him lethargic and morose, leading him to a nihilistic philosophy of life, projecting negativity onto the meaninglessness that inherently has no negativity, cosmically cucking himself with Horror?

I like them for being so different from his other stories but I agree. The first stories are the best. The Bungalow House and The Red Tower are some of his best.

my experience with Teatro Grottesco collection was similar. I loved the first story - Purity, which baited me into having high expectations. Liked the Town Manager, it had that surrealy absurd vibe I had felt while watching The Lobster couple of years ago. Don't really know why it reminded me of this film.
Agree on The Bungalow House being good. I wanted Teatro Grottesco to go full schizo Jacob's Ladder style, but the story got tangled in its forced mysteriousness, and then stumbled and fell short of expectations.
I'd like to read Ligotti's first collection – Songs of a Dead Dreamer and Grimscribe, some of these days.

Not the same. Graphic novel is a format.
