Evil is real, humanity is artistically cruel and civilization may be seen as both the taming of the wild and the death of the frontier

>The man who believes that the secrets of the world are forever hidden lives in mystery and fear. Superstition will drag him down.
*lowers fedora*
>There is no God and we are his prophets.

>It makes no difference what men think of war. War endures. War was always here. Before man was, war waited for him. The ultimate trade awaiting its ultimate practitioner.
*teleports behind you*
>Whatever in creation exists without my knowledge exists without my consent.

>Men of God and men of war have strange affinities.
*slices you in two with a single stroke*
>This is the nature of war, whose stake is at once the game and the authority and the justification. Seen so, war is the truest form of divination. It is the testing of one's will and the will of another within that larger will which because it binds them is therefore forced to select. War is the ultimate game because war is at last a forcing of the unity of existence.War is god.
*leaves a single rose on your corpse*

>> No.21986824

There’s not much to get. Violence is eternal and the West is dying. That’s about the only intellectual thing you can gather from this book. Otherwise, it’s just aesthetic nihilism.

this was sort of funny the first time. he's a fictional character, if he didn't say shit like that but still slaughtered hundreds by himself, while maintaining the reputation of the smartest man around, it'd be much cringier.

Why does everyone consider it so profound then

Is unrelenting Blood Meridian shilling the result of that one YouTube video?

NTA, but people consider it profound because it says all that beautifully and grippingly. The Kid is barely a character, but your heart is pounding right alongside him and Tobin in the last scenes with the gang. It's trite to point out "violence is inevitable and self-justifying", it's profound to find a specific real historical event that demonstrates it so clearly, to write characters like the Judge who straddle the line of believability, and to do so with language as powerful as Blood Meridian.
Read Ecclesiastes. If you're looking for some hidden truth in novels, you're fooling yourself. Even philosophers primarily recycle ideas. Even religions. The value of literature lies in its sophistication and aesthetics, not its argumentative strength and insight into morality.

I think the profundity is more aesthetic than anything else, but I would say it just barely alludes at containing some greater truth and that alone reels people in.

The End of the West is the closure of the frontier. You're stuck here with the God of This World Judges, Archatron, fallen fellow men unless and until permanent exit is secured up there with the stars on new worlds. And even there there might be savages to tame and history will gin up a new cycle of violence sooner than later but it would at least be a reprieve.

Yes and it is necessary perhaps even Good A Chiguhr's integrity surely pleases God more than those weaseling out of the inevitable with mealy mouthed words.
