I for the most part really like Girard. Not too long ago I bought pic related, which is a collection of some of his most important essays. Obviously, he isn't perfect, just like everybody else.

One of the more troublesome aspects of his work is his inability to recognize, either voluntarily or involuntarily, that some situations exist where a break in the mimetic impulse not necessarily helps to prevent more violence. One may get the impression by the way he puts his ideas forward that he thinks that any escalation of violence that occurs is always due to retaliation, viz. mimesis. Of course, this lay not be am accurate reflection of his thoughts. The point is that it can be understood that there are some readers who come to said conclusion. I can see how would could get there.

The truth is: there are some situations where inaction or passivity can lead to kore violence. For example: going for a walk in your city, you see someone repeatedly hit another. You might think that by remaining uninvolved there will be no escalation and thus further violence can be prevented. The facts are different, however. By standing up to the abuser or calling the police it can be equally the case that he runs away and thus further damage to the victim is prevented.

Imagine in WW2, seeing the Nazi persecution of Jews, the world community would have decided to let them be for fear of aggravating the situation. Far more Jews would have been killed. Peace is not always above justice. In fact, there can be no true peace without justice. Appeasement does not always lead to a stop of violence.

Another criticism against him is his downplaying of weaponized victimhood. There is a spot in the collection where he acknowledges that it exists, but he seems to be like: meh, it's not that big of a deal.

It is that big of a deal. Weaponized victimhood is just another tool for the imposition of power and thus it bears the possibility to be used for oppression.

Apart from that, I do like his work and I would to read more.

Would you like to give a QRD of the book you read, OP?

I forgot to mention that a big reason why I like Girard is that he's basically the opposite of Nietzsche.

Whereas Nietzsche posited the so-called "Pathos der Distanz" as catalyst for conflict, Girard puts forth an argument that it's actually more a "Pathos der Einheit" that is responsible for it. We fight because we want the same thing.
