That works. I think reading these three books you can gain a pretty good insight into the heart of the country. If you were looking for one singular book, though, it's Grapes of Wrath. Easily.

I think Steinbeck is so overrated. The only truly great American novelists were Hawthorne and Melville. America transformed so wildly in the 19th century that nothing really incredible has been able to grow here ever since. I do admit that I really like Blood Meridian, but Cormac McCarthy is not an equivalent author at all.
